May 24, 2017 | Men's Lacrosse
BALTIMORE, Md. - Seniors Christian Carson-Banister and Cal Dearth of the Boston University men's lacrosse team were recognized as All-Americans by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) on Wednesday.
The two standouts are the first USILA All-Americans in program history. Carson-Banister is a Third Team All-American while Dearth was selected as an Honorable Mention All-American. Both players earned the same distinctions from Inside Lacrosse earlier this month when the magazine announced its first-ever list of All-Americans.
Carson-Banister was one of the best goalies in the country all year. The 2017 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year ranks third in the country in save percentage (.586) and is 12th in the nation in goals-against average (8.64). A unanimous First Team All-Patriot League selection, Carson-Banister made 10 or more saves in 12 of his 17 starts while leading BU to its best-ever record at 12-5. One of those wins was an 11-save effort in which he allowed just four goals against Lehigh to earn the program's first-ever Patriot League tournament victory. Carson-Banister averaged 14 saves per game against 2017 NCAA tournament teams and went 3-1 against those four squads.
A native of Dallas, Texas, Carson-Banister finished his career with 640 saves, a number that ranks second among active goalies in the NCAA. He posted a .557 save percentage and a 9.36 goals-against average over four years at BU.
Dearth shined this season at attack after playing three years at midfield. He started all 17 games for the Terriers en route to being named a Unanimous First Team All-Patriot League performer. He led BU with 57 points thanks to 38 goals and 19 assists. His 57 points and 38 goals are single-season program records. Dearth secured a point in every game this season while saving his best for last. In the Terriers' final five games of the year, Dearth scored 15 goals and and added five assists for 20 points, including nine goals in the final two Patriot League regular-season games to help BU clinch the third seed for the conference tournament.
A native of Ridgefield, Connecticut, Dearth graduated from BU as the Terriers' all-time leader in goals (83), assists (70) and points (153). He is also the first player in program history to earn First Team All-Patriot League honors in three straight years.
Both Carson-Banister and Dearth will play in the 76th annual USILA North/South All-Star Game on Friday night at Providence College.
