THE EIGHTH INNING
- With the bases loaded and one out, senior Kaitlin Sahlinger reached home on junior Alexa Ponce's RBI infield grounder.
- The Terriers added three more runs with the help of two Duke errors and a two-RBI single from Schanda.
- Falling to 2-3 on the season, Duke scored a run of its own in the bottom half off a BU error and had the game-tying run at the plate with one out, but freshman Ali Dubois (2-0) killed the rally by inducing an infield groundout and a strikeout.
- BU struck first in the third when senior Brittany Younan singled through the right side, stole second and scored on junior Alex Heinen's RBI single.
- Duke grabbed its first lead in the bottom of the third with a bunt single, RBI double and RBI single against freshman Cali Dolfi, who tallied three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
- The Terriers jumped back ahead with the help of junior Emily Morrow's RBI grounder in the fourth and Killebrew's RBI double double in the fifth.
- Facing Dubois in relief during the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Devils had three consecutive one-out singles to tie the game, 3-3, but left the bases loaded.
- BU loaded the bases as well with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Duke got a pop up to end the threat.
- Dubois kept the ball in the infield during the bottom half to send the contest to extra innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers jumped out ahead in the bottom of the first on Younan's triple and Schanda's RBI bunt single.
- BU eventually loaded the bases with one out, but BCU (1-1) ended the threat by throwing out Schanda at home on a failed squeeze play and getting a strikeout.
- The Terriers had three hits in the first inning and added three more over the next two innings against Alexis Bermudez but only managed one hit in the final four innings for the loss against reliever Victoria Guzman.
- The Wildcats scored a run in the third and fourth against sophomore Lizzie Annerino (0-1) with the help of two BU errors and a wild pitch and then extended the lead in the fifth against Dubois on a solo homer from Ryan Jackson, who hit .412 last season with 14 homers.
- BCU put the game away in the sixth against Dolfi with three runs off two hits, an error and a wild pitch.
- The Terriers opened with two wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1993-94.
- BU edged Duke in extra innings in the first-ever meeting between the two programs, as the Blue Devils are competing in their inaugural season ... Duke entered the contest with wins over Michigan State (3-0) and Florida Atlantic (4-3).
- Younan's triple put her tied for seventh all-time at BU with 10 alongside senior Emma Wong and Richele VanZandt ('92).
- MEAC runner-up BCU won for the second consecutive year against the Terriers following last season's 5-1 victory.
- The Terriers will conclude the three-day event Sunday (Feb. 11) against a pair of Big Ten squads, Michigan State (9 a.m.) and Ohio State (11:15 a.m.).
- The Spartans edged BU, 4-3, at FAU back in 2016 after the Terriers claimed an 11-4 win in 2014 at South Carolina.
- The Buckeyes mark the Terriers' first opponent to be coming off an NCAA appearance ... They went 35-18 last season and finished runner-up in the Big 10 tournament before going 0-2 at the Tennessee Regional.
- OSU won the previous meeting, 13-10, in 2005 in Marietta, Georgia.
