DuBois No-Hits Army West Point in PL-Opening Doubleheader Split
March 31, 2018 | Softball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Highlighted by freshman Ali DuBois' first-career no-hitter, the Boston University softball team opened Patriot League play with a 3-0 eight-inning victory before dropping a 3-2 decision for the doubleheader split at Army West Point on Saturday afternoon.
DuBois (11-5) threw 100 pitches and finished with four strikeouts against a walk and hit-by-pitch to claim BU's 24th no-hitter. Her catcher, junior Alex Heinen, delivered a two-out, two-RBI single in the top of the eighth against starter Courtney Springman (7-11) to extend the Terriers' (17-16, 1-1 PL) win streak against Army to five games.
In the second contest though, after seeing their 2-0 lead erased by back-to-back solo homers in the fifth, the Black Knights (12-18, 3-2 PL) brought back in Springman, who went on to pitch 2.2 no-hit innings in relief and collect the victory with the help of a costly BU error in the sixth.

GAME 1: BU 3, Army 0 (8 innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Heinen had the only single through the first seven innings for either team in the top of the first with one out.
- Junior Alexa Ponce drew a walk to lead off the fifth and took second on senior Kaitlin Sahlinger's ground out, but Springman kept BU off the scoreboard with a line out and ground out.
- Army had a two-out hit-by-pitch in the first and a lead-off walk in the second but was unable to advance either runner.
- Sahlinger started the eighth with a single, took second on junior Emily Morrow's sacrifice bunt and advanced to third after the Black Knights were unable to apply the tag in time on freshman Jen Horita's grounder.
- With a 2-2 count and two outs, Heinen singled to center to plate two runs, and senior Emma Wong followed with another RBI hit to extend the lead to 3-0.
- DuBois induced a pair of infield pop ups and then got a strike out looking to seal the no hitter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Black Knights started off the first with a double and RBI grounder against DuBois to get on the scoreboard.
- Army then had a two-out single and RBI double in the second to extend the lead and create a pitching change, as freshman Cali Dolfi (4-7) entered the contest.
- After stranding a runner at first in the third, the Terriers finally got to Macey Newbary in the fifth with Ponce and Sahlinger going deep on back-to-back pitches.
- Springman entered the circle and relief and retired the next five batters on 11 pitches.
- Army finally provided Springman a lead in the sixth off a pair of singles, including one with two outs that got misplayed in the outfield by the Terriers.
- Wong was hit by a pitch to start the seventh, but Springman ended the game with a 1-6-3 double-play grounder.
- DuBois pitched the Terriers' 24th no-hitter and third in the Patriot League play after Lauren Hynes ('16) no-hit Holy Cross in 2016 and Melanie Russell ('16) pitched a perfect game against Bucknell in 2014.
- DuBois became the first BU rookie since Whitney Tuthill ('13) to pitch a no-hitter ... Tuthill earned a 2-0 win at UNC Charlotte in 2010.
- Though BU records are unclear if DuBois is the first ever to require extra innings, Patriot League records show she is the second ever in the conference to go at least eight innings ... Lehigh went eight against Maine in 2006.
- Despite winning two Patriot League championships and reaching a combined three title game appearances, today's win marked the first time the Terriers opened PL play with a victory.
- BU and Army had a doubleheader split for the first time since the Terriers joined the PL in the summer of 2013 ... This series is also the first since 2014 to not feature a three-game sweep by either team.
- Ponce went deep for the second time this season, while Sahlinger collected her second-career homer.
- Wong extended her streak of reaching base to 19 games.
- Following today's results, the Terriers are now 4-4 in extra-inning contests and 2-8 in one-run decisions.
- The teams will decide the weekend series victor on Sunday (April 1) with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
- Fans will be able to watch the action on the Patriot League Network.
