BOSTON – After opening the dual season against Miami University on Saturday morning at Harvard, the Boston University women's tennis team will host regional foe Providence Sunday afternoon at the Track & Tennis Center.
The Terriers will face the RedHawks at 11 a.m. on Jan. 26 for the first time since posting a 5-2 win in 2015 at Dartmouth. They will meet the Friars on Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. for the first time since posting a 6-1 victory in 2000. The Providence will be part of a tennis tripleheader, as the men will host both Siena (9:30 a.m.) and Sacred Heart (6:30 p.m.).Led by 34th-year head coach Lesley Sheehan, BU is looking to bounce back from last season's 9-13 record that included a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Army West Point in the Patriot League semifinals. The defeat snapped a four-year streak of claiming the conference title and automatic NCAA berth. Senior and 2017 PL Player of the Year Remi Ramos is the top returner with a combined 77 singles and doubles victories. She was named a 2018 All-PL honoree alongside Iryna Kostirko, who graduated in May.
This past fall, the Terriers participated in four tournaments. Freshman and five-star recruit Shelly Yaloz led with an 8-3 singles record and nearly perfect 11-2 doubles mark alongside sophomore Emily Kim, who collected seven singles wins. Sophomores Lily Burchell and Katya Martens combined for 11 more, while senior Sabrina Faybyshev went 4-1 after missing most of last season due to injury.
Miami is 0-2 to start the dual season following 7-0 loss at Kentucky and 6-1 defeat at Louisville last weekend. The RedHawks were picked to finish third in the Mid-American Conference after posting a 12-9 record last season and falling to Buffalo in the conference tournament final.
The Friars also have two matches this weekend, first visiting UMass on Saturday before facing the Terriers on Sunday. After posting a 4-16 record last season, Providence went 1-2 in the fall with 7-0 win over Holy Cross and identical 6-1 losses to UC Irvine and Fairfield.
