Men's Lacrosse Announces 2020 Captains
October 17, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse
BOSTON – Reece Eddy. Nicholas Ellerton, Chase Levesque and Tommy Nook will serve as captains of the 2020 Boston University men's lacrosse team, head coach Ryan Polley announced.
"I'm really pleased with the selection by the team," Polley said. "They recognized four guys that have been tremendous leaders. Each one of them possesses qualities that make guys want to follow them. They all fall within our program's five pillars and they've done a wonderful job so far this fall."
Ellerton, Levesque and Eddy are all seniors while Nook enters his junior year with the Terriers. All four student-athletes have been important members of the program since arriving at BU, not only succeeding on the field but setting a great example in the classroom and in the community. Ellerton and Levesque have made the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in each of the past three seasons, with Eddy making the squad after his first year as a Terrier. Nook has shown impeccable leadership skills despite facing the adversity of two injuries during his first two years with the program. He is the first junior captain since Michael Laviano in 2018.
"I'm really proud of Tommy and the way he's been able to lead through the adversity and injuries he has faced over the last two years," Polley said. "The fact that Tommy's only played in two games over the last two years and his teammates recognized him as one of the best leaders is very impressive. For someone to be able to lead and deal with the amount of adversity that he's dealt with is a testament what a great person he is and the character he possesses."
Ellerton started all 17 games at close defense last year for BU and recorded career highs in ground balls (28) and caused turnovers (14). In his first collegiate start at Providence, Ellerton tallied two ground balls and two caused turnovers to help BU earn an 8-7 win. Ellerton also forced three turnovers in a crucial 13-9 win over Bucknell to help BU earn home field advantage for the conference quarterfinals.
"I'm really happy for Nick," Polley said. "He has been a staple of our defense these last couple years and he's really come into his own this fall with his leadership role. He has always been a guy who leads by example, but he has really come out of his shell and has started to hold his teammates accountable and really push them. He was the one player on our team who was a unanimous selection by his teammates, so that's very impressive."
Eddy made an immediate impact on the field in his first season with the Terriers. The dynamic LSM appeared in all 17 games and finished the year with a program-record 34 caused turnovers in addition to 71 ground balls. Eddy recorded a ground ball in all 17 contests and had at least one caused turnover in 14 of the Terriers' 17 tilts. He earned Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors and twice matched the single-game program record with six caused turnovers, including in the Terriers' 18-11 win over No. 2 Loyola Maryland.
"Reece has been an incredible addition not only to our defense but to our culture as well," Polley said. "He is a hard worker, a pillar in our community and a guy that does everything the right way. He's a hard-nosed player that brings an intensity to both our defense and our team as a whole. The guys recognize that and they will follow him."
Levesque has been outstanding throughout his decorated career at BU. One of the best LSMs in the conference and the region, Levesque earned All-New England honors for the first time in 2019. He set career highs in both ground balls (65) and caused turnovers (31) and was selected as a Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week.
"I can't say enough about Chase and his development over the last four years," Polley said. "He's really taken his game and his leadership to the next level. He's put a lot of time and effort into making himself the best player on and off the field, and I think everybody understands what a great work ethic he has and what a great teammate he is."
