DuBois, Bats Show Off Firepower in DH Sweep at Upstate Classic

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Highlighted by sophomore Ali DuBois' 17 combined strikeouts and a pair of two-run homers, the Boston University softball team opened the Upstate Classic with wins over UConn and Bowling Green on Friday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium.
The Terriers (4-3) started the first game with three runs in the first and then used senior Madi Killebrew's fifth-inning two-run blast to defeat the Huskies (3-2), 7-3. In the second contest, BU broke a 3-3 deadlock against the Falcons (0-1) in the sixth with six runs off five hits, including freshman Aliyah Huerta-Leipner's two-run homer, for the 9-3 victory. Senior Emily Morrow continued her impressive play at the plate, hitting a combined 6-of-8 with three runs scored, three RBIs and a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Huerta-Leipner started the bottom of the first with a walk and then took second on Morrow's single up the middle.
- Senior Alexa Ponce followed with an RBI single before advancing to third on Killebrew's RBI groundout and reaching home on reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week Emily Gant's RBI single.
- BU extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth on sophomore Marina Sylvestri's single and sophomore Jen Horita's RBI double to left.
- The Huskies looked to mount a two-out rally in the fifth by loading the bases on three singles and hitting a three-RBI double against the reigning PL Pitcher of the Week DuBois.
- In the bottom half, Morrow hit an infield single, took second on senior Alex Heinen's sac bunt and then scored her second run of the game on Killebrew's homer.
- After UConn stranded runners at the corners in the sixth thanks to three DuBois strikeouts, Morrow extended the lead to 7-3 by plating Huerta-Leipner home with an RBI double to left center.
- The Huskies led off the seventh with an infield single, but DuBois earned her 11th strikeout of the game along with two ground outs to seal the complete-game victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Playing in their season opener, the Falcons took advantage of two walks by Gant and a throwing error to grab a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
- The Terriers placed two on via hit-by-pitch and walk before hitting into a 6-4-3 double play.
- Bowling Green added a second run in the second with a lead-off double, sacrifice bunt and RBI single through the right side.
- BU took its first lead in the bottom half with three runs off three hits, including Sylvestri's RBI single and Morrow's two-RBI single.
- Junior Kali Magane replaced Gant in the third and and allowed a solo homer to Madi McCoy, an Illinois Central College transfer who led NJCAA last season with 20 homers.
- DuBois made her second appearance of the day after Magane walked another batter and did not allow a single hit in five scoreless innings of work.
- The Terriers broke the game open in the sixth, as Gant led off with a walk, took second on Sylvestri's single to right and reached third on a wild pitch.
- Freshman Nicole Amodio hit a two-RBI to left to clear the bases and then scored o Huerta-Leipner's two-run homer.
- BU added two more insurance runs to pull away for the victory with Morrow scoring on Killebrew's RBI single and Heinen reaching home on sophomore Maya Kipfmiller's sac fly to center.
- Morrow collected a career-high four hits in the first game and is now hitting .560 on the season through seven contests.
- Killebrew led BU with four RBIs, finishing ahead of Morrow's three RBIs, while Amodio and Huerta-Leipner both had two.
- DuBois reached double figures in strikeouts for the fifth time in her young career and first since tallying 11 at Colgate on May 6, 2018.
- The Terriers improved to 10-8 all-time against UConn in the first meeting since claiming a 3-1 home victory in 2014.
- BU also improved to 2-1 all-time against Bowling Green since claiming a 5-4 win in 2007.
- The Terriers will face the Falcons again on Saturday at 11 a.m. and then face the tournament-host Spartans at 1 p.m.
- BU won the lone meeting against USC Upstate, 4-2, in 2012 in Clearwater, Florida.
