Gray Nominated for Tewaaraton Award
April 25, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse
WASHINGTON – Sophomore Chris Gray of the Boston University men's lacrosse team is one of 25 men's nominees for the 2019 Tewaaraton Award, as announced on Thursday.
Gray is the first Terrier male to ever be selected as a Tewaaraton nominee. The award is given annually to the best men's and women's Division I lacrosse player. Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced on May 9 and invited to the 19th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on May 30.
"This nomination is a credit to how hard Chris has worked and it's a credit to his teammates that put him in a position to be selected as one of the top 25 players in the country," head coach Ryan Polley said. "Chris has taken his game to the next level this season and this an incredible recognition of what a great player he is."
"Not only that, but Chris is extremely humble," Polley said. "When Chris received the Mickey Cochrane Award (top male athlete) from our athletic department, he began his speech by thanking his teammates and telling them that he wouldn't be here without them. That shows what a great leader he is and what great character he has."
The Wading River, New York, native is in the midst of the best statistical season in program history. Gray leads the entire country with 94 points, is second in the NCAA with 53 assists and ranks eighth in the country with 41 goals. One of only two underclassmen nominated for this year's award, Gray is also one of only two players in the NCAA with 40 goals and 40 assists this season. He has tallied at least four points in all 14 games and has notched eight or more points on five separate occasions.
Gray has rewritten the Terrier record book in 2019, breaking his own single-season records in points and assists that he set last season. He needs just four points to eclipse the single-season Patriot League points record and is on pace become the first conference player to reach the 100-point milestone. When Gray reaches the century mark, he will be just the 18th different NCAA player to have done so.
BU has clinched a spot in the Patriot League tournament and will close out the regular season on Friday at Navy at 4 p.m.
