May 23, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse
Sophomore Chris Gray of the Boston University men's lacrosse team was selected as a Second Team All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) on Thursday.
Gray, who was named a First Team All-American by Inside Lacrosse earlier this month, earned his second All-America nod from the USILA; he was an honorable mention selection by both Inside Lacrosse and the USILA last year. The sensational sophomore is the first two-time All-American in program history; both Christian Carson-Banister and Cal Dearth were recognized as All-Americans in 2017.
A native of Wading River, New York, Gray was one of the best players in the country all season. Entering the NCAA Tournament, Gray led the entire nation with 111 points, which is a new single-season Patriot League record. He ranked second in the NCAA with 62 assists and his 49 goals were tied for eighth most in Division I. Gray was the first Patriot League player to ever tally 100 points in a single season, surpassing 2012 Tewaaraton winner Peter Baum's mark of 97 points that he set in his award-winning campaign.
One of 25 nominees for the 2019 Tewaaraton Award, Gray is one of only five men's lacrosse players in NCAA history to ever notch 40 goals and 60 assists in the same season. In just 34 career games, Gray has tallied 80 goals and a program-record 102 assists for 182 points. He rise up the all-time leaderboards came as a result of zero games with fewer than three points this season, including a 10-point effort against Holy Cross on April 20 and four other nine-point performances.
Not only was Gray a force to be reckoned with on offense, but he was also a key part of the Terriers' tenacious ride. Gray set career highs with 36 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers this season and was integral in BU ranking sixth in the country in opponents' clearing percentage (.748).
In addition to this honor, Gray earned First Team All-Patriot League recognition for the second straight year and was named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team after notching six goals and six assists for 12 points in two postseason games.
