Silipo Elevated to Associate Head Coach
July 1, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse
BOSTON – Mike Silipo has been elevated to associate head coach of the Boston University men's lacrosse program, head coach Ryan Polley announced on Monday.
Silipo will enter his fourth season with the Terriers in 2020. He orchestrated one of the top offensive units not only in the Patriot League but in the entire NCAA this past year. BU averaged a program-best 12.59 goals per game in 2019, which ranked second in the conference and 19th in the nation. The Terriers also finished the year ninth in the country and second in the Patriot League with a program-record 8.53 assists per game. Since Silipo arrived on Commonwealth Ave., the Terriers have shared the ball effectively, ranking among the top 20 teams in the NCAA in assists per game each of the last three seasons.
In addition to the success of his 6-on-6 offense, Silipo has built one of the best man-up units in the country. The Terriers were first in the Patriot League and 11th in the country with a man advantage this past season, one year after boasting the third-ranked man-up offense in the country in 2018.
"Since Mike has stepped foot on campus he has been a tremendous asset to our program," Polley said. "He's a young star in our profession and his value goes far beyond his on-field coaching. Mike has built tremendous relationships not only with our current players but with our alumni, our administration and the local community. Our program has made impressive strides since Mike's arrival and I'm confident that with his continued dedication that we'll reach even greater heights."
His attackers have earned three All-America accolades and eight All-Patriot League selections since 2017, including the program's first-ever First Team All-American in 2019. James Burr excelled under Silipo's guidance and graduated this year as the team's all-time leader in goals (153) and points (194).
A testament to Silipo's impact on the Terrier offense is the fact that not only did four returning players post career years in 2019, but several freshmen had terrific debut seasons at either attack or midfield. Timmy Ley set a program record for goals by a rookie with 34 while Jake Cates (15g, 8a), Matt Hilburn (7g, 4a) and Jett Dziama (8g, 2a) all reached double digits in points in their first year at BU.
"I want to thank President Brown, Drew Marrochello, and Ryan Polley for the opportunity to continue to work at Boston University," Silipo said. "Boston is my home and this lacrosse program has become a vital part of my family. I look forward to working hard every day for our selfless student-athletes and cannot wait to see everyone come the start of the new school year."
Prior to arriving at BU, Silipo coached for three years at Ithaca College, his alma mater. A 2011 graduate of Ithaca, Silipo also spent two seasons as an assistant at Williams College, not only as part of the lacrosse program, but serving as the running backs coach for the football team as well.
