Connolly Hat Trick Lifts No. 23 Terriers to 4-1 Win at Ohio in Season Opener

ATHENS, Ohio – Thanks to a hat trick from junior Ailsa Connolly, the No. 23 Boston University field hockey team opened its season with a 4-1 road victory over Ohio on Saturday evening at Pruitt Field.

- The Terriers wasted little time in getting on the board as Connolly opened the scoring just 2:35 into the contest.
- Freshman Ellie McIntyre came into the game following the opening tally and promptly scored her first collegiate goal just over three minutes later.
- After Ohio cut the BU lead to 2-1 with 2:17 left in the first half, Connolly added her second goal of the night with just 17 ticks left before halftime to help the Terriers regain a two-goal cushion at 3-1.
- Connolly completed her hat trick just 1:31 into the latter half when she sent home a shot following a pass from classmate Maggie New.
- The Bobcats earned a pair of corners after halftime but freshman goalkeeper Caroline Kelly made stops each time.
- All three first-half tallies by BU were field goals while Connolly's third marker came off the last of four consecutive corners as New found her after corralling a blocked shot by senior Kiley Gallagher.
- Kelly earned the win in goal, making two saves in 56:13 before senior Livy Golini played the rest of the way without facing a shot.
- BU outshot Ohio, 19-4, and held an 8-2 advantage in corners.
- The Terriers forced the Bobcats to make nine saves - seven by goalkeeper Sophia Boothby along with defensive saves by Jillian Shive and Amy Edgerton.
- All 20 players on BU's roster got into the game.
- The Terriers have now won their past five season openers.
- This marked the third straight season opener that a BU freshman scored her first collegiate goal (2018 – Casey Thompson; 2017 – Ailsa Connolly, Petra Hall).
- Connolly earned her second career hat trick, having also achieved the feat on Sept. 23, 2017, against Lafayette.
- The Terriers will continue their holiday weekend in Ohio by heading to No. 14 Ohio State for a game on Monday (Sept. 2).
- Game time is set for noon.
