
Aztecs, No. 1 Bruins Stymie Terrier Bats on Day Two of UCLA Invitational

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Continuing the UCLA Invitational, the Boston University softball team was undone by a pair of strong pitching performances in losses to San Diego State and No. 1 UCLA on Saturday afternoon at Easton Stadium.
Junior Ali DuBois (8-5) recorded nine strikeouts in an impressive complete-game effort, but the Aztecs (17-9) scored one run in the first and prevented eight Terrier (12-7) runners from reaching home plate for the 1-0 decision. In the second matchup, the defending national champion Bruins (23-1) followed up with a 10-0 run-rule contest that saw Lexi Sosa plate four runs and pitch a perfect game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Aztecs started the game with a single and hit-by-pitch before advancing runners on a passed ball and scoring on an RBI single.
- DuBois prevented further damage with back-to-back strikeouts.
- Junior Jen Horita started the second inning with a single, took second on sophomore Nicole Amodio's sac bunt and advanced to third on a ground out.
- Oregon transfer Maggie Balint then gave up a walk, but junior Patricia Dun was caught in a rundown trying to help Horita score from third.
- Sophomore Aliyah Huerta-Leipner and junior Marina Sylvestri had back-to-back two-out singles before Balint got a strikeout.
- The Terriers loaded the bases in the sixth with one out on two singles and a hit-by-pitch but came up empty due to a pair of infield pop ups.
- A 2017 USA Softball Player of the Year finalist, Balint got three quick outs in the seventh to seal the shutout, as BU stranded eight total on base.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bruins struck first in the bottom of the first with back-to-back two-out doubles against sophomore Emily Gant (4-2).
- Sosa homered to right center in the second and followed up with a two-RBI single in the third.
- UCLA then added a three-run homer in the same inning and posted five runs off four hits in the fourth, as the Terriers utilized four total pitchers.
- Sosa retired all 15 Terriers for the perfect game but had to work hard, as she totaled 74 total pitches in the contest.
- DuBois moved up to No. 8 all-time in the Patriot League at 478 strikeouts.
- Sylvestri and Horita finished with two hits apiece against San Diego State.
- SDSU snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 5-3 all-time against the Terriers.
- Meeting for the fourth straight season, UCLA improved to 4-0 in the series after becoming the first opponent since 2004 to no-hit the Terriers ... That season, Baylor earned a no-hitter after then-No. 18 Tennessee's Monica Abbott tossed a five-inning perfect game.
- The Terriers will wrap up the UCLA Invitational on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET with a rematch against the Mustangs.
- BU won the first meeting on Friday, 5-2.
