Field Hockey Closes Season with 6-1 Triumph at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman Payton Anderson had a five-point performance and classmates Tegan Poerio and Ella Rottinghaus scored their first goals as Terriers to help the Boston University field hockey team earn a 6-1 road victory over Holy Cross in the season finale on Friday afternoon at Hart Turf Field.

Anderson had two goals and an assist to finish her rookie campaign with team highs of 24 points and 10 goals. Poerio opened the scoring early in the second quarter and the Terriers went on to turn a 2-0 lead into a 6-0 advantage in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Tess Csejka and junior Ellie McIntyre also scored for BU.

BU finishes the year with a 4-14 mark while the Crusaders turn in a record of 6-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first quarter in which BU had seven shots and four corners, the Terrier offense broke through in the 19th minute to open the scoring.
  • The Terriers moved the ball around the circle - right to left - and it made its way to Poerio, who cut straight through the Holy Cross defense before pushing a shot to the boards at the 18:52 mark.
  • BU doubled its lead before the break as Anderson penetrated the circle from the right side before eying Csejka in the middle and sending a hard pass her way.
  • Csejka executed a perfect redirect past Holy Cross netmidner Brooke Ross at 26:26 to make it a 2-0 lead for the visitors.
  • BU put the game away in the third quarter, scoring three times on seven shots.
  • The Terriers' transition game was exceptional and it resulted in numbers and good looks in the circle, especially in the third.
  • Junior Mikayla Crowley had a perfect no-look pass across the crease to sophomore Thalia Steenssens and her attempt was kept out of the cage off the body of Holy Cross defender, resulting in a penalty stroke.
  • Anderson calmly deposited the stroke try to the bottom left of the cage for a 3-0 advantage at 34:28.
  • Just over three minutes later, BU once again was efficient off a rush as Crowley found Rottinghaus on the right side of the circle where the freshman sent home her first collegiate goal, creating a 4-0 cushion.
  • Anderson struck again at 42:17, powering past the defense on the right side before popping a shot over Ross to complete her first two-goal performance as a Terrier.
  • Up 5-0 entering the fourth, BU was not done as they scored on their 12th and final penalty corner of the contest.
  • The corner play was set up for junior Rachel Borzymowksi at the top of the circle and her attempt was tipped in by McIntyre from five yards to make it a 6-0 affair.
  • The Crusaders spoiled BU's shutout bid when Emily Dionne scored off a corner with 6:13 to play in regulation.
GAME NOTES
  • BU's six-goal output was its highest since an identical 6-1 win at Colgate on Oct. 11, 2019
  • Junior Caroline Kelly earned the start in goal for BU and stopped both shots she faced before sophomore Kate Thomason played the final quarter and made one save while allowing the late goal.
  • The Terriers outshot Holy Cross, 26-6, and held a 12-3 advantage in corners.
  • BU recorded at least six shots in each quarter.
