Terriers Ride Strong Pitching and Senior Pair to DH Sweep over Army West Point
April 10, 2021 | Softball
BOSTON – Boosted by the bats of seniors Jen Horita and Marina Sylvestri along with strong pitching in the circle, the Boston University softball team claimed a doubleheader sweep over Army West Point to wrap up the eight-game homestand Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers (20-2, 9-1 PL) first pulled out their sixth one-run victory of the season, 4-3, and then became the first opponent in 13 contests to run-rule the Black Knights (5-8, 3-5 PL), 8-0, in five innings.
Fellow San Mateo, California, natives Horita and Sylvestri went a combined 8-for-12 with four RBIs and three runs scored on the day. Freshman Alex-Rose Molinar had a key two-RBI single in the first game, and junior Nicole Amodio delivered a game-changing two-RBI double during the second contest.
In the circle, DuBois used her 130th pitch to claim her third strikeout and to remain perfect on the year at 14-0. A fellow preseason All-PL honoree alongside DuBois, Gant (2-2) pitched a one-hitter for her sixth-career shutout and BU's 10th overall on the season.

GAME 1: BU 4, Army 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first with Coker getting hit by a pitch, taking third on Sylvestri's single up the middle and scoring on Horita's single to right field.
- After freshman Lauren Nett loaded the bases with a walk, Molinar singled to left to plate two runs.
- Army had two on in the top of the second, but DuBois collected an infield grounder and tossed to first to end the threat.
- BU loaded the bases in the bottom half with two outs for the second time before Army got an infield pop up to keep the deficit at 3-0.
- The Black Knights' Megan Muffett was frozen on a seemingly well-placed offspeed 1-2 pitch but got the call for a ball and took advantage with a two-out, two-run homer on the next pitch to cut BU's lead to 3-2.
- Army kept the pressure on in the fourth with a lead-off single, walk and sac bunt to put two in scoring position before grounding out to short and hitting a pop up to the catcher.
- BU added what proved to be the game-deciding run in the fifth when Horita hit a hard infield single, advanced to third on the throwing error and scored on Nett's RBI single to left.
- Army responded in the next inning with a two-out RBI single up the middle against DuBois, who ran into trouble again in the seventh with back-to-back two-out singles.
- DuBois though sealed the victory with three straight strikes, as Army stranded the go-ahead run at first.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU had its first quality chance in the bottom of the second following Horita's single and Nett's double, but Army kept the game scoreless with a strikeout and fly out to right.
- Army's Emily Iannotti (1-3) seemingly earned a third out with sophomore Caitlin Coker at second on a strikeout, but the pitch hit the dirt, allowing junior Aliyah Huerta-Leipner to reach first and race all the way to third on a throwing error.
- Sylvestri followed with an RBI double down the left field line, and Horita added an RBI single to right for the 3-0 advantage.
- BU earned four more runs in the fourth on four hits and an error with Amodio doubling down the left field line to extend the lead to 5-0.
- Coker hit an RBI single, and Sylvestri doubled again to put BU's lead at 7-0 entering the fifth.
- Gant held Army to just one hit through five innings and put the game away in the bottom half on a hard-hit ball that was misplayed in the infield and allowed Nett to score from second.
- The Terriers are 6-0 this season in one-run decisions and now own four run-rule victories.
- DuBois now needs just one more win to tie BU Hall of Famer Audrey West ('96) for No. 2 in the BU record book at 75 victories.
- DuBois moved up to No. 5 at BU with 55 career complete-game performances.
- BU collected a season-high four doubles in the run-rule victory with Sylvestri recording a personal-best two doubles.
- Gant recorded BU's fourth one-hitter of the season after DuBois accomplished the feat twice against Merrimack and once against Colgate. Sophomore Allison Boaz remains the lone Terrier with a no-hitter this season at Merrimack.
- The Terriers' defense had zero errors in 12 combined innings of work after recording five in the second game on Friday.
- After winning three of the four games, the Terriers improved to 18-11 in the all-time series and claimed their first run-rule victory against Army since 2018.
- The Terriers will hit the road and visit the Bison on April 17-18 with a doubleheader set for 12 p.m. on each day.
- BU is 12-7 all-time in the series after recording a split at Bucknell in 2019.
