July 8, 2022 | General, Women's Tennis
Returning for a 14th year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.
Coming in at No. 9 on this year's countdown is the women's tennis team, which claimed a pair of major Patriot League year-end awards after reaching its third straight conference tournament final.
Sophomore Victoria Carlsten led BU with nine singles victories in the No. 1 slot, including six straight-set wins against Patriot League competition, to earn BU's first Player of the Year award since 2017. She also collected notable non-conference wins against Wisconsin, Harvard, Brown and Dartmouth while boasting a perfect 5-0 record at No. 2 doubles.
Graduate student Emily Kim earned her second PL Doubles Team of the Year award and first since 2019 by teaming with junior Erica Di Battista for eight wins at line 1, including two against the 2021 PL Doubles Team of the Year from Army West Point. Kim and Di Battista posted non-conference wins against Brown, Boston College, UConn, Duquesne and Rhode Island.
As a team, BU swept eight opponents, including Rhode Island, Binghamton and Bryant. The Terriers also earned non-conference wins against New England rivals in Brown and UConn before going 5-0 in PL play to claim the top seed. They started the tournament with 4-0 wins over Lafayette and Loyola Maryland to reach the program's seventh final in eight appearances before coming up just short to Army, 4-1, in a matchup of the last two conference champions.
Other highlights include sophomore and 2021 PL Rookie of the Year Kaitlin Tan earning her second All-PL First Team award alongside Carlsten. Tan recorded four wins at No. 2 singles and teamed with senior and 2019 PL Rookie of the Year Shelly Yaloz for a 16-3 doubles mark, including 10-2 record at line 2. Yaloz totaled 40 combined singles and doubles victories to reach the 100-win milestone.
