BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team had its win streak snapped in a tightly contested 1-0 contest with visiting Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at New Balance Field.
The game's lone goal came from the stick of Lafayette's Lineke Spaans 1:25 into the second half.
The Terriers had a four-game win streak come to an end and now stand at 7-6 overall and 2-2 in Patriot League play. The Leopards improve to 7-5 with a 4-1 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team recorded a shot in the opening quarter and the Terriers handled all three shots that the Leopards put forth in the second quarter.
- The Terriers successfully defended a corner in the opening minute of the second half but the visitors would score the game's lone goal soon after.
- The game was ultimately decided off a restart as Spaans was quick to jump on the ball and penetrated the right side circle before drilling a shot to the far netting at the 31:25 mark.
- BU nearly put together a quick equalizer off a corner but junior Payton Anderson's shot was saved and sophomore Martu Coulo's rebound bid at the right post was knocked away by a Lafayette defender.
- The Terriers had the only shot on goal of the final quarter but sophomore Caroline O'Brien's hard shot off a corner went into the pads of Lafayette netminder Emma Garvey.
- BU pulled goaltender Kate Thomason in favor of an extra attacker for the final 2:18 was unable to generate a late scoring chance.
GAME NOTES
- Each team recorded two shots on goal and earned three corners.
- Lafayette held a 6-4 advantage in overall shots.
- Thomason made one save in goal for the Terriers while Garvey made two stops for the shutout.
- Lafayette clinched a spot in the Patriot League tournament and the Terriers need just one more conference win to join them.
