Field Hockey Blanks Holy Cross in Patriot League Opener, 4-0

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Boston University field hockey team opened Patriot League play on Monday with a 4-0 road victory over Holy Cross at Hart Turf Field.

Sophomore Martu Coulo opened the scoring just 19 seconds into the game and added an assist. Junior Payton Anderson scored off a stroke and assisted on Coulo's tally while sophomore Caroline O'Brien and senior Pili Alvarez also notched a goal.

Senior goaltender Kate Thomason made two saves for her first collegiate shutout and senior Rachel Borzymowski preserved it with a fourth-quarter defensive save.

The Terriers are now 3-3 on the year with a perfect 3-0 record in road games. Holy Cross moves to 2-4 with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers scored one goal in each quarter en route to the victory.
  • BU earned a corner just 15 seconds into the contest and used it to quickly get on the board.
  • Positioned in front of the goal, Coulo redirected a bid from Anderson to the boards at the 19-second mark for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Terriers executed a perfect left-side attack early in the second quarter to extend their lead.
  • Junior Katie Devine found Coulo in stride near midfield and the sophomore dribbled in before sliding a perfect pass to O'Brien, who cut in on the left side of the circle and beat the Holy Cross goalkeeper near side in the 18th minute.
  • Coulo drew a stroke in the 37th minute when her tip off a corner attempt went off the body of a Holy Cross defender near the right post.
  • Anderson attempted the stroke and converted it for her third goal of the season.
  • All four of the Crusaders' corners in the game came after halftime and they nearly scored off one as Borzymowski turned aside a bid while standing in front of the goal line by the far post with just over 11 minutes to play.
  • Alvarez capped the scoring with her first collegiate goal as she knocked the ball in at the goalmouth before Holy Cross netminder Brooke Ross could bat it away following an attempt by freshman Nicole Lauro.

GAME NOTES
  • The Terriers held a 19-5 shot advantage and earned 10 corners while allowing four.
  • Ross made eight saves for the Crusaders.
  • All three BU saves came in the second half as Holy Cross did not record a shot before halftime.
  • O'Brien leads the team with five goals this season and they have all come in the past four games.
  • Borzymowski now has 11 career saves.
  • Lauro earned her first point as a Terrier with an assist on Alvarez's goal.
