Kasey Ricard pitched a three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and freshman
Kylie Doherty was 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the No. 21/24 Boston University softball team to a 4-0 win and a weekend sweep over Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon at BU Softball Field.
BU outscored the Crusaders by a margin of 23-0 in the three-game sweep following run-rule wins of 14-0 and 9-0 on Saturday and collected three Turnpike Trophy points in the process. BU now has a 13-7 lead in this year's competition.
Doherty opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with her sixth home run of the season and the Terriers added a run in both the third and fifth innings.
Ricard (17-3) and the Terriers never allowed a Crusader past first base on the day en route to the team's fourth straight shutout and eighth straight win.
BU improves to 35-4 overall and 9-0 in Patriot League play while Holy Cross falls to 8-24 with an 0-9 conference mark.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Graduate student Lizzy Avery opened the bottom of the second with a walk before Doherty drilled the first pitch she saw over the wall in left-center for a 2-0 lead.
- BU tacked on another run in the third as graduate student Audrey Sellers reached on an error before scoring on a double by senior Lauren Keleher to make it 3-0.
- The Terriers added another insurance run in the fifth inning without getting a hit.
- Sellers once again got on safely due to a Holy Cross error before Keleher was hit by a pitch and Avery walked to load the bases.
- Doherty added her third RBI of the contest by drawing a bases-loaded walk to push the score to 4-0.
- Eight of Holy Cross' final 12 outs came by strikeouts as Ricard secured her 11th shutout of the season.
GAME NOTES
- Ricard, who struck out the side in the fourth inning, secured her sixth double-digit strikeout performance of the season.
- Doherty added a single in the seventh to finish the day 2-for-2 at the plate.
- Graduate student Caitlin Coker recorded her 11th double of the season.
- Sophomore Brooke Deppiesse was 4-for-6Â in the series to raise her average to .343.Â
