Returning for a 16th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. In 2023-24, over half of BU's teams either won a conference title or finished runner-up at their league championship, and all of those programs will be represented in the countdown. Check back each Tuesday and Friday this summer as we unveil this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.
Coming in at number two in this year's Terrier 12 is men's ice hockey, as Hobey Baker Award winner Macklin Celebrini helped lead the Terriers to a second consecutive trip to the Frozen Four.
BU, the preseason No. 1 team in the nation, remained in the top 10 all season and in the top two of both national polls for most of the year en route to the program's 24th Frozen Four berth. The Terriers punched their ticket to Saint Paul with a pair of 6-3 victories in the NCAA Sioux Falls Regional, including a triumph over then-No. 7 Minnesota in the regional final. Celebrini was named Most Outstanding Player of the regional after totaling five points (1g, 4a) in two games, including three primary assists against Minnesota.
Second-year head coach Jay Pandolfo was once again a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award as the National Coach of the Year after leading BU to a 28-10-2 record. He became the fastest active head coach in Division I men's ice hockey to win 50 games at his current school.
Celebrini, who signed with the San Jose Sharks after being selected with the No. 1 pick in this June's NHL Draft, became just the fourth freshman and fourth Terrier overall to win the Hobey Baker Award winner as the top Division I men's college hockey player, doing so as the youngest player in the nation at just 17 years old. He also became the fourth man to be named Hockey East Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season, and was also named a First Team All-American and secured the Tim Taylor Award as the National Rookie of the Year. He totaled 64 points on 32 goals and 32 assists and was the only player in the country to collect 30 goals and 30 assists this past season.
Sophomore Lane Hutson earned First Team All-America accolades for the second straight season, marking the first time since 2014-15 (Jack Eichel, Matt Grzelcyk) that two Terriers have been selected as First Team All-Americans in the same season. Hutson was outstanding in 2023-24, totaling a career-best 49 points by matching his career high of 15 goals and posting a career-best 34 assists. Hutson paced the nation's blue liners with 1.29 points per game this past season. A two-time Hockey East First Team All-Star and New England Division I All-Star, Hutson totaled an impressive 97 points on 30 goals and 67 assists in 77 career games, which led all active NCAA defensemen.
Hutson and Celebrini were two of the Terriers' four Hockey East All-Stars, as freshman defenseman Tom Wilander and junior goaltender Mathieu Caron were also recognized. In addition, graduate student Cade Webber was selected as Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman after setting a new NCAA single-season record with 137 blocked shots. He was also one of two inaugural winners of the Hockey East Academic Champion Award. BU matched a program record with 15 Terriers being named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team, including Webber and Celebrini.
