BOSTON - Senior
Payton Anderson broke a 1-1 tie in the 54th minute to lead the Boston University field hockey team to a 2-1 home victory over Maine on Sunday afternoon at New Balance Field.
BU opened the scoring in the opening minute of the second half on a goal from junior
Caroline O'Brien. After Maine knotted things up in the 51st minute, the Terriers regrouped and used Anderson's third goal of the weekend to secure the victory.
The Terriers improve to 3-3 on the season while Maine falls to 4-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first half in which the Terriers held a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal, BU quickly earned a corner to start off the second half and used it to open the scoring.
- Anderson had her initial corner shot blocked but sophomore Olivia Hammer collected the rebound and sent it towards the far post, where O'Brien redirected it in at the 30:37 mark.
- Maine recorded three shots in the third quarter and all of them were on goal but graduate student Kate Thomason was up to the task each time to keep the visitors off the board.
- The Black Bears turned up the pressure in the final quarter and ended the shutout bid off a corner.
- Poppy Lambert collected the insert and slotted it to the right side for Alexandra Sacker, whose shot went off Thomason and in at 50:38.
- Only three minutes later, the lead was BU's once again as a corner play was set up for Anderson and she drilled a shot to the boards with assists from junior Megan Wetzel and senior Tegan Poerio.
- Maine pulled goalkeeper Rozárie Mrázová with 2:49 to play and proceeded to earn three corners but the Terrier defense stood tall to seal the victory.
GAME NOTES
- Maine held a 13-9 shot advantage with eight of its shots coming in the final quarter.
- Each team earned two corners through the game's first three quarters but the Black Bears held an 8-1 advantage in the fourth.
- Thomason finished the game with five saves to earn her second win of the season.Â
- Mrázová tallied four saves for the Black Bears.
- Hammer's assist was the first of her college career.
- Anderson now has a team-best four goals on the season and she has moved into BU's top-10 list for career goals with 28, tying her for ninth with Pam Spuehler '08.
- BU has now won three straight meetings with the Black Bears to up its advantage in the series history to 33-9.
