Terriers Set for NCAA Opening Round Matchup Against No. 20 Fairfield

The Boston University field hockey team is set to begin its 15th NCAA Tournament journey in program history when the Terriers face off with No. 20 Fairfield in an Opening Round matchup on Wednesday (Nov. 12) at Bedford Field.
The initial push back is set for 2 p.m.
Seeded fourth in the Patriot League tournament the Terriers knocked off top-seeded American in the semfinal, 1-0, before topping defending champion Lafayette in the final by a score of 3-2 to earn the Patriot League's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament.
The winner of this contest will face the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Princeton (15-3), on Friday (Nov. 14) at noon. ACC semifinalist Syracuse (12-6) will face Big East champion Liberty (17-2) in the other first-round game in Princeton at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

- Boston University ended a seven-year drought, winning its fifth Patriot League title with a thrilling 3-2 win over defending champion Lafayette on Saturday.
- The Terriers, who upset top-seeded American in the semifinals, became the first No. 4 seed to win the PL title since 2001 when Fairfield did so as an associate member.
- BU snapped two long losing streaks in the process as it had lost six straight to Lafayette and four straight to American.
- Senior Caroline O'Brien scored all three goals, including the late game-winner, against Lafayette to become the firstplayer ever to record a hat trick in the PL title game.
- Junior Nicole Lauro scored the game's lone goal against American while classmate Sophie Ortyl posted a two-save shutout.
- BU is now 8-10 on the year and on a three-game win streak, its longest in over two years.
- Senior Caroline O'Brien leads all Patriot League players in points (37) and goals (15) and is fifth in assists (7).
- O'Brien's single-season goals mark is currently tied for sixth all-time in program history and her single-season points mark is tied for eighth all-time in program history.
- Freshman Molly Driscoll (5g, 4a) and junior Nicole Lauro (6g, 1a) have added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
- Molly's older sister, Maggie, is fourth on the team in points with eight on two goals and four assists.
- Junior Sophie Ortyl has started the past 16 games in goal and currently sports a .637 save percentage and a 2.61 goals against average.
- Fairfield has won 13 of its past 14 games and claimed its second consecutive NEC title with a 3-0 win over Wagner on Saturday.
- The Stags' best win of the season RPI-wise was Vermont (42) on Oct. 12.
- The Stags, who were a perfect 9-0 in conference play this season, are in the NCAA tournament for the sixth time.
- In last year's NCAA Opening Round, Fairfield fell to Delaware by a score of 2-1.
- Fairfield has a balanced offensive attack as six players have all recorded at least eight goals and 19 points.
- Senior Konni Hoffman has team highs of 29 points and 12 goals while classmates Alex Senior (10g, 5a) and Pilar Mengotti (9g, 6a) have added 25 and 24 points, respectively.
- Senior Alice Pifferi has a team-best 10 assists.
- Graduate student Peyton Rahn has started all 20 games in goal and sports a 1.33 goals- against average and a .671 save percentage.
- Mengotti earned the NEC Defensive Player of the Year award, junior Catalina Ness was named the NEC Midfielder of the Year and freshman Kaelyn Fogelson received NEC Rookie of the Year honors. Head coach Laura Gebhart and her staff were named the NEC Coaching Staff of the Year.
- The Terriers are a perfect 10-0 against Fairfield with the last two meetings coming in the postseason.
- Most recently, BU posted a 5-0 home win in the 2017 Opening Round to advance to play UConn.
