CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Helped by junior Kasey Ricard's seven strikeouts and multiple clutch plays, the Boston University softball team earned its third straight victory with a 4-3 win at Queens Tuesday evening.
With their first one-run win of the season, the Terriers improve to 12-9, while the Royals drop to 5-13. Highlight plays include junior Megan Coyle delivering a two-RBI single and sophomore Livia Christopher throwing a Royal out trying to steal second with a teammate at third base and zero outs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With their first one-run win of the season, the Terriers improve to 12-9, while the Royals drop to 5-13. Highlight plays include junior Megan Coyle delivering a two-RBI single and sophomore Livia Christopher throwing a Royal out trying to steal second with a teammate at third base and zero outs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Brooke Deppiesse started the game with a one-out double to right, but the Royals were able to end the threat with a ground out and strikeout.
- BU struck first in the third when Deppiesse delivered a second double after sophomore Kylie Doherty's single to set up Coyle's one-out, two-RBI single to center for the 2-0 lead.
- Queens needed little time to rally, as they scored three runs with the help of three hits, including a two-out, two-RBI double that followed a misplayed sac bunt.
- The Terriers loaded the bases in the top of the fourth thanks to a one-out hit-by-pitch and back-to-back walks but were unable to drive the ball out of the infield with two ground outs.
- After Ricard (8-6) quickly retired the side, BU retook the lead in the fifth with senior Sydney Pecoraro and sophomore Libby Walsh delivering back-to-back singles to help set up RBI grounders from both senior Tyesha Williams and Christopher.
- Queens also started the inning with back-to-back singles and zero outs, but after Christopher threw the Royal out trying to put two in scoring position, Ricard earned a strikeout and caught a liner to keep the lead.
- The Royals again had a runner at third in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a lead-off single and perfectly-placed sacrifice bunt.
- After tying the game as a pinch-runner for Pecoraro, sophomore Kyomi Apalit caught a liner toward third and ended the threat by catching an infield pop up.
- Ricard rebounded from a two-out single with her seventh strikeout to earn the complete-game victory.
- With two doubles, Deppiesse now owns seven total through 21 games after posting 13 last year over 60 appearances.
- Ricard pitched her third complete game without allowing a walk following earlier wins over Florida Gulf Coast and Radford.
- The Terriers are now 1-2 in games decided by one run.
- The two teams combined for 13 runners left on base.
- BU improved to 4-0 all-time against Queens after winning the third meeting on Sunday and two contests last season.
- BU will make the short trek to defending American Athletic Conference champion Charlotte on Wednesday (March 12) at 5 p.m.
- The Terriers are 3-6 all-time after winning both games last season at Charlotte, 2-1 and 5-0.
