Terrier Twelve - #2: Men's Ice Hockey Wins Beanpot, Advances to National Title Game

August 11, 2025

Returning for a 17th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Monday and Wednesday this summer as we unveil this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.

Coming in at No. 2 in this year's Terrier Twelve is men's ice hockey, which won a record 32nd Beanpot title and advanced all the way to the national championship game.

One of just two teams to win at least one NCAA Tournament game in each of the last three seasons, the Terriers got to their third consecutive Frozen Four in dramatic fashion, defeating Cornell, 3-2, in overtime of the NCAA Toledo Regional final thanks to a goal from junior Quinn Hutson. BU then defeated Penn State, 3-1, in the national semifinal before falling to Western Michigan in the championship contest.

Several Terriers earned individual accolades throughout the season, highlighted by National Rookie of the Year and First Team All-American Cole Hutson. The dynamic defenseman not only led all NCAA freshmen in points (48) and assists (34) but finished first among all NCAA defensemen in points and points per game (1.23). His 14 goals ranked second among the nation's blue liners, as did his 34 helpers. Hutson was named Beanpot MVP as well as Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Toledo Regional.

In the Beanpot, Hutson totaled four points (2g, 2a) to lead BU past Harvard, 7-2, in the opening round before the Terriers defeated top-ranked Boston College, 4-1, on the strength of freshman Mikhail Yegorov's 43-save effort. Yegorov, who joined BU in late January, was outstanding for the Terriers in their run to the national title tilt. Freshman Cole Eiserman lit the lamp in that Beanpot win over BC, one of his team-leading 25 goals. Eiserman paced all NCAA rookies in goal scoring and was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team with Hutson.

Four Terriers - C. Hutson (first team), Q. Hutson (second team), sophomore Tom Willander (second team) and junior co-captain Ryan Greene (third team) were named Hockey East All-Stars, with Willander and the Hutsons also being chosen as New England All-Stars. Greene, Q. Hutson and classmate Devin Kaplan went on to make their National Hockey League debuts in April, with Kaplan becoming the 100th Terrier to skate in the NHL.

Freshman Sascha Boumedienne, the youngest defenseman in all of college hockey in 2024-25, became the 27th Terrier to be chosen in the first round of the NHL Draft and the 11th Terrier to be taken in the opening round after spending the previous season at BU when he heard his named called by the Winnipeg Jets in late June.

Head coach Jay Pandolfo was named a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award as National Coach of the Year for a third straight season. A 1995 national champion with the Terriers, Pandolfo has yet to miss the Frozen Four as a player or as a head coach.
