BOSTON – Senior
Helene Tyburczy notched her first collegiate goal, but the Boston University women's soccer program was unable to overcome Fairfield in a 2-1 setback on Thursday evening at Nickerson Field.
BU (1-1) leveled the score in the 66th minute on a corner kick after the Stags (2-1) ignited the scoring 10 minutes prior, but Fairfield's Maddy Theriault broke the deadlock with the game-deciding tally in the 77th minute to hand the Terriers their first loss of 2025.
Senior
Giulianna Gianino earned the assist on Tyburczy's tally for her second of the year. Senior goalkeeper
Susan Shobeiri made a career best four saves.
Theriault finished the match with three points while Sam Kersey recorded the match's first goal. Ashlyn Walsh and Kelly O'Connor also picked up assists to back up goalkeeper Katie Wright's three stops.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gianino recorded the game's first shot just over four minutes in, turning on the ball 20 yards out for a blast that zipped to Wright for the save.
- Senior Mackenzie Stickelman gained space just under 25 yards away in the 14th minute, but rocketed a shot over the crossbar.
- In the 21st minute, junior Samantha Aronson coaxed BU's first corner, where Stickelman's header from Gianino's insert bounced wide right. On the next Terrier possession, Wright made a diving stop to her left to deny Gianino.
- On Fairfield's second corner of the evening, after a loose ball in the box, freshman Ariana Schwinn-Clanton smartly sent the ball off a Stag and past the end line, leading to a Terrier goal kick in the 32nd minute.
- Shobeiri capped the opening half with her first save in the final minutes, snagging a roller from Ella Pisani just inside the box.
- The Stags broke the ice in the 56th minute when Theriault drew a triple team from BU's defense, and her left-to-right cross found an open Kersey for the finish in the right side of the goal.
- BU generated a corner kick in the 66th minute. Gianino's insert directly met Tyburczy's boot for the goal to level the score at 1-1.
- Both sides traded opportunities in the 73rd minute, with Kersey's chance meandering wide left and sophomore Juliana Osterman's try deflected by Wright on the other end.
- Fairfield regained the lead in the 77th minute when a right-corner cross from O'Connor found Walsh's head, and Theriault beat Shobeiri to the net from eight yards away.
- BU only created one shot the rest of the match, with Gianino's 81st-minute attempt blocked before reaching the keeper.
