Terriers Roll to Victory Over Brown and UMass Lowell
March 14, 2026 | Softball
BOSTON – Highlighted by a .552 on-base percentage and senior Kasey Ricard's strong pitching performance in the circle, the Boston University softball team opened the home round-robin series with victories over Brown and UMass Lowell Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers (16-10) started off with a 17-0 (5) run-rule win against the Bears (2-9) and capped the day on a 7-3 win against the River Hawks (9-11). In total, BU tallied a combined 22 hits, including five for extra bases, and added 10 walks alongside five hit-by-pitches while limiting the two opponents to just seven total hits.
Junior Kylie Doherty led the offense in the doubleheader sweep, batting 4-for-6 with a pair of homers, seven RBIs and four runs scored. Senior Megan Coyle, senior Brooke Deppiesse and sophomore Camryn Lyons all recorded three RBIs apiece with the two upperclassmen joining freshman Madolyn Coupal in reaching home plate four times.
Ricard (11-5, 1 SV) picked up a win in the first contest to tie the program record at 85 career victories and followed up with her first save of the season, as she finished with nine strikeouts against just three hits allowed in a combined seven innings of work. Classmate Haley Ganino (5-1) recorded the final two outs against Brown to seal the shutout and then earned three strikeouts against three hits and three unearned runs allowed to collect the victory.

GAME 1: BU - 17, Brown - 0 (5 inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Ricard quickly retired the side in the top of the first and freshman Irys Kline led off with a single, Doherty shortly thereafter gave BU the lead for good by launching a 2-0 pitch to right for a 2-0 lead.
- The Bears loaded the bases in the second off a hit-by-pitch, single and walk with zero outs, Ricard claimed three straight strikeouts to keep the shutout alive.
- BU then blew open the game by totaling five runs off four hits and three walks, including Lyons' two-RBI single to center.
- The Terriers followed up in the third with six runs off five hits, including Doherty's two-RBI single up the middle and Coyle's two-RBI double to right center.
- Brown threatened again in the fourth with a lead-off single off Ricard's leg and a one-out walk, but Ricard then earned back-to-back swinging strikeouts.
- BU extended the lead to 17-0 with four runs off three walks, two hit-by-pitches and a single.
- Sophomore Ava Johnson recorded a strikeout, and Ganino added two more outs for the shutout victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UML started the contest with a walk and advanced the runner to second on a sac bunt, but Ganino earned a ground out and strikeout.
- Kline led off with a single for the second time on the day and eventually scored off Doherty's RBI grounder for the 1-0 lead.
- The Terriers added three runs to the scoreboard in the third with the help of Coupal's double, Deppiesse's RBI single and Doherty's smashed two-run homer toward left.
- The River Hawks came right back in the fourth by taking advantage of an error with a two-out RBI single and two-RBI triple to right center to pull within one, 4-3.
- BU though scored two runs during the bottom half via RBI singles from Kline and Deppiesse.
- UML managed to just put one River Hawk on base against Ricard over the final three innings.
- The Terriers' final run came off a dropped fly ball in right.
- BU scored at least 17 runs at home for the first time since a 17-2 victory over Lafayette back in 2021.
- The Terriers' 17-run margin of victory marks the program's biggest at home, surpassing an 18-2 win vs. Hartford back in 2010.
- With her 85th career victory against Brown, Ricard tied the program record for wins currently held by Cassidy Hardy ('10) and Ali DuBois ('21).
- Ricard now sits at 794 strikeouts, six away from becoming the second BU and Patriot League pitcher to reach 800.
- Thanks to the two homers, Doherty now owns 30 total, two shy of the program record held by Chiya Louie ('07) and one behind both Liz Alley ('06) and BU Hall of Famer April Setterlund ('11).
- The Terriers will host their second tripleheader on Sunday with Brown and UMass Lowell opening the competition again at 10:30 a.m.
- BU will then face the River Hawks at 12:45 p.m. and lastly the Bears at 3 p.m.
