Ricard Reaches Pair of Milestones in DH Shutout Sweep Over UMass Lowell and Brown
March 15, 2026 | Softball
BOSTON – Highlighted by a .513 batting average and senior Kasey Ricard's pair of one-hit pitching performances, the Boston University softball team earned a doubleheader shutout sweep against Brown and UMass Lowell Sunday afternoon.
The Terriers (18-10) defeated both the defending Ivy League champion Bears (3-11) and the River Hawks (9-13) by an identical score of 9-0 (5) in run-rule fashion to extend their win streak to 11 games. BU finished with a combined 20-2 advantage in hits with five going for extra bases while totaling nine nine walks.
Ricard (13-5) never left the circle and posted seven strikeouts against just two hits allowed without giving up a single walk. With the first shutout win over UMass Lowell, she set a program record for career wins at 86 total and then during the second game became the second in Patriot League history to reach the 800-strikeout milestone.
At the plate, senior Megan Coyle, senior Brooke Deppiesse, junior Kylie Doherty and sophomore Camryn Lyons all collected three hits apiece to combine for 11 runs scored and seven RBIs. Sophomore Kieren McHugh led BU with four RBIs, helped by a pinch-hit three-run blast against UMass Lowell.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After stranding two on base in the first inning, the Terriers loaded the bases during the second with one out on three singles but the River Hawks were able to turn a 5-3 double play to keep the game scoreless.
- Ricard quickly retired the side in the third after avoiding trouble in the second with a fly out to center that kept two River Hawks (single, error) away from home plate.
- Doherty broke open the game in the bottom of the third with a two-RBI single up the middle following singles from freshman Irys Kline and Deppiesse.
- McHugh followed Lyons' RBI double and back-to-back singles from junior Kyomi Apalit and sophomore Cara Edwards by launching a 2-1 pitch to right for a three-run blast and 8-0 lead.
- Coyle added a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth.
- Defending at shortstop, freshman Madolyn Coupal earned two assists and a putout on a pop up to seal the 9-0 (5) victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU needed little time to pull away, scoring five runs off four hits, three walks and a stolen base in the bottom of the first.
- Kline led off with a walk, took second on Deppiesse's single up the middle and scored on Coyle's RBI single down the right field line.
- Doherty plated Deppiesse on an RBI single up the middle and later scored on Lyons' RBI triple down the left field line.
- The Bears had a runner at second with zero outs due to a pair of errors, but Ricard kept the shutout thanks to a pair of strikeouts and a foul out to right.
- BU added three runs in the second with the help of five walks and an error for the 8-0 lead.
- Junior Livia Christopher added one more run by doubling down the left field line and eventually scoring on Kline's RBI grounder toward shot.
- Trying to avoid a run-rule loss, Brown broke up a no-hit bid by Ricard with a two-out single to center but then struck out looking for the loss.
- BU will remain home and next host Stonehill in a doubleheader on Wednesday (March 18) starting at 2 p.m.
- The Terriers swept last year's home doubleheader by a combined score of 20-2 after posting a 11-1 victory in 2024.
