Softball Shuts Out Stonehill in DH Sweep

BOSTON – Boosted by five extra-base hits and two strong pitching performances, the Boston University softball team earned a home doubleheader sweep against Stonehill Wednesday afternoon.
The Terriers (20-10) first scored at least one run in each of the last four innings as part of a 8-0 (5) run-rule victory and then pulled out a 5-0 decision in the second contest against the Skyhawks (1-16).
Junior Sophie Naivar and freshman Irys Kline both went an identical 3-for-6 with two extra-base hits apiece. Naivar recorded two doubles, while Kline had a double and homer alongside two walks. They joined juniors Livia Christopher and Kylie Doherty in earning two RBIs each for the sweep.
In the circle, senior Kasey Ricard (14-5) posted seven strikeouts against five hits allowed for her seventh shutout, and classmate Haley Ganino (6-1) utilized three strikeouts alongside a personal-best five assists to claim her first career solo shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ricard started off with two strikeouts, and the offense had Terriers at the corners with two outs before flying out to left to end the first inning.
- The Skyhawks threatened in the second with back-to-back one-out singles, but BU was able to turn a 6-4-3 double play to keep the game scoreless.
- Naivar began the bottom half with a single and scored the game's first run off Christopher's RBI single up the middle.
- With two outs, Kline launched a 3-2 pitch to center for a 3-0 lead
- The Terriers combined for four runs over the next two innings with Naivar recording an RBI double and Doherty adding an RBI sac fly.
- Trying to avoid a run-rule loss, Stonehill loaded the bases in the fifth on two singles and a hit-by-pitch with two outs, but Ricard earned her seventh strikeout to end the threat.
- Sophomore Cara Edwards started off the bottom half with a walk, and junior pinch-runner Aimee Metz eventually scored BU's eighth run on senior Brooke Deppiesse's RBI single through the left side for the walk-off victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After both teams stranded a runner in scoring position in the first inning, the Terriers grabbed the lead for good with two runs off four consecutive singles in the bottom of the second.
- Christopher and and Edwards delivered back-to-back RBI singles to plate sophomore Camryn Lyons and junior Kyomi Apalit for the 2-0 advantage.
- Doherty lofted a 2-1 pitch in the third to left to extend the lead to 3-0.
- The Skyhawks had runners at first and second with one out in the fourth, but BU was able to turn a double play on a grounder to short with a force at second and throw home in time for the tag.
- Stonehill threatened again in the fifth with pair of singles before grounding out to Ganino.
- The Terriers added two more runs during the fifth off three hits, including Naivar's RBI double to left center and Coyle's RBI single through the left side.
- Ganino limited the Skyhawks to one hit over the final two innings to earn her first career shutout.
- BU will open Patriot League play at Lafayette with a three-game weekend series set for March 21-22.
- Last year, the Terriers swept the series at home with two 5-0 victories and a 9-1 (6) win.
- Two years ago in Pennsylvania, BU won three games by a combined score of 28-1.
