EASTON, Pa. – After pulling out an 8-7 game one victory, the Boston University softball team cruised in the second contest to a 13-0 run-rule win to earn the doubleheader sweep at Lafayette Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers (22-10) doubled the Leopards (7-21) in hits and played error-free defense to open Patriot League play at 2-0. In the first matchup, BU overcame an early 4-0 deficit with seven straight runs and then responded to Lafayette's game-tying three-run blast in the fifth with junior Kylie Doherty's game-winning solo homer in the top of the sixth. During game two, the Terriers scored three runs in the first and added nine runs in the sixth.
Doherty led the offense batting a combined 5-for-8 with four RBIs and three runs scored, while junior Livia Christopher also earned four RBIs batting 3-for-6. Senior Brooke Deppiesse and junior Kyomi Apalit both matched Doherty in touching home plate three times apiece. Junior Sophie Naivar finished 2-for-3 with two runs and five walks that included a program record-tying four walks in the first game.
After Lafayette totaled seven runs against seniors Kasey Ricard (15-5) and Haley Ganino through the first four innings, sophomore Danika Nell (1-3) retired all nine Leopards she faced in relief with the help of six strikeouts. Ricard bounced back in game two by limiting the Leopards to just three hits in her eighth shutout of the season.
