March 25, 2026 | Softball
BOSTON – Highlighted by a program record-tying four home runs and senior Kasey Ricard's 11 strikeouts, the defending Patriot League champion Boston University softball team run-ruled defending Big East champion UConn, 9-1, in a six-inning home victory.
The Terriers (24-10) scored their first seven runs going yard and then added two more on RBI singles to extend their active win streak to 17 contests, as the Huskies fell to 10-22. Juniors Kylie Doherty and Kyomi Apalit plated a combined five runs in the first inning to help BU grab the lead for good and improve to 9-0 at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman Irys Kline earned a lead-off walk and scored on Doherty's two-run blast to right.
- After senior Megan Coyle and sophomore Camryn Lyons singled through the left side with two outs, Apalit launched a 1-2 pitch to left to extend the lead to 5-0.
- Ricard then earned three swinging strikeouts in the top of the second, and classmate Brooke Deppiesse delivered a two-out solo HR during the bottom half.
- The Huskies avoided the shutout in the fourth with the help of a fielding error, two walks, infield single and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
- UConn's rally attempt was quickly halted by Ricard's second strikeout of the inning and eighth overall.
- After BU left two on base in the bottom of the fourth, Ricard claimed two more swinging strikeouts.
- Junior Sophie Naivar started the fifth with her first homer of the season by lifting a 2-1 pitch just over the right field fence to prompt UConn's third pitching change.
- The Terriers added one more run in the bottom half with the help of senior Megan Coyle's walk, Lyons' single and junior Livia Christopher's RBI single to right center.
- UConn earned a one-out double and two-out walk but left runners on the corners with a foul out to third.
- BU then put the game away with Doherty earning a one-out walk, advancing to third on Coyle's two-out infield single and Lyons' RBI single to center.
- The Terriers' 17-game win streak is tied for the sixth most in program history and one shy of tying for fourth. 11th-year head coach Ashley Waters has led BU to five of the six 17+ game win streaks.
- The Terriers have now hit four homers in a game five times, last accomplishing the feat at Boston College on April 26, 2012.
- Already the program record holder for career homers, Doherty tied the Terriers' single-season mark of 14 set by Chiya Louie ('07) back in 2007.
- With 14 HRs this year and 34 overall, Doherty is now two away from tying the PL single-season record and five away from tying the career mark.
- Doherty increased her RBI total this year to 46, nine shy of tying the BU record and 10 away from tying the PL record.
- BU all-time wins leader Ricard now sits at 90 victories, four away from tying the PL record.
- Thanks to her third double-digit strikeout performance of the season, Ricard now owns 822 strikeouts, No. 3 all-time in the program record book and three shy of tying Cassidi Hardy ('10) for the No. 2 slot.
- BU improved to 16-8 all-time against UConn with its ninth straight win in the series after matching the 2010 squad for largest margin of victory.
- The Terriers will resume conference play by hosting Lehigh in a three-game series.
- Both Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single contest will start at 12 p.m.
- Last year, BU went 2-2 against the Mountain Hawks with a 1-0 win in the opening round of the PL tournament at Army West Point following a 1-2 road mark.
- In 2024, the Terriers went 4-0 at home, highlighted by a 1-0 eight-inning victory in the PL title game.
