BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Sophomores Madden Murphy and Timothy Shannehan of the Boston University men's lacrosse team earned weekly awards from the Patriot League, the conference announced on Monday.
Shannehan played like an All-American on Saturday, scoring a career-best six goals and adding an assist for seven points in the Terriers' 14-13 comeback win at Lehigh. Shannehan put the team on his back in the fourth quarter, factoring on the Terriers' final five goals of regulation. He assisted on the goal that made it 11-9, then scored three straight goals to give BU a 12-11 lead. Shannehan then had an unreal diving effort with 2.7 seconds remaining to force overtime. Shannehan also had three ground balls and one caused turnover. This is the second time this year that Shannehan has earned this accolade.
Murphy was dominant at the faceoff X against the Mountain Hawks, winning a career-best 20 of the 27 faceoffs he took and collecting a career-best seven ground balls. Murphy, who took every draw for BU in Saturday's victory, won the two biggest faceoffs of the game, first giving BU a chance to tie the game after Lehigh scored with 15.4 seconds remaining. He then won the opening draw of overtime, allowing Tyler Fox to score just 23 seconds into the extra frame. Murphy went 5-for-6 at the X in the fourth quarter to help BU erase two separate three-goal deficits. This is the second time in his career that Murphy has earned this award.
BU will host a top-20 matchup on Saturday when the No. 20 Terriers welcome No. 13/14 Army West Point to Nickerson Field. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
