Durocher Named Assistant Coach for USA Hockey Camp
December 12, 2006 | Women's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - Boston University women’s ice hockey head coach Brian Durocher was named an assistant coach for USA Hockey’s annual holiday camp in Lake Placid, N.Y., running from Dec. 26 to Jan. 2, as announced by the organization on Tuesday. The camp features 42 of the nation’s top women’s ice hockey players divided into two teams for daily practices, strength training and scrimmages.
Durocher will join a coaching staff of nine, including head coach Mark Johnson who was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team that defeated the Soviet Union and went on to win the gold medal. Both are former collegiate players, Durocher playing for Boston University from 1974-78 and Johnson playing for Wisconsin from 1976-80. During the 1977-78 season the two faced off on the ice, as BU defeated Wisconsin 5-2 in the NCAA semifinals. The Terriers went on to win the national championship.
The camp is held to prepare the women for the 2007 International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship. Of the 42 women on the roster, 19 competed with the 2006 U.S. Women’s Select Team at the Four Nations Cup in November. In addition, six of those 19 were also part of the U.S. entry at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games.
Durocher will help coach some familiar faces, as five of the players hail from teams BU has faced this year. He will also get a chance to scout St. Cloud State’s freshman forward Holly Roberts before the Terriers travel to Minnesota to face the Huskies in a two-game series beginning Jan. 5, 2007.
