December 2, 2006 | Women's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Boston University women’s ice hockey team fell to Providence, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena. The Terriers (10-5-1, 3-5-1 HE) led 2-0 through the first 23 minutes of play, but Providence (6-6-3, 4-1-2 HE) scored four unanswered second period goals to capture the victory. Freshman Melissa Anderson and sophomore Erin Seman each scored to extend their current respective point streaks to four games as BU gave up more than three goals for the first time since Nov. 18.
Anderson opened the scoring for the Terriers at 10:58 of the first period, netting her sixth goal of the season on assists from senior co-captain Cara Hendry and sophomore Nicki Wiart. The goal came 28 seconds after Anderson had exited the penalty box and BU finished killing off a Providence 5-on-3 power-play. The assist extended Hendry’s point streak to six games.
Providence was awarded another two-person advantage late in the first after penalties to sophomores Erin Seman and Amanda Shaw at 18:02 and 19:44, respectively, left the Terriers shorthanded again. BU was equal to the task however, killing off both infractions.
The Terriers increased their lead to 2-0 when Seman converted a pass from sophomore co-captain Gina Kearns on the power-play at 3:09 of the second period. It was Seman’s team-leading seventh goal of the season and marked the sixth straight game that BU has converted at least one power-play goal.
BU was able to maintain the 2-0 lead for the next 10 minutes, but the Friars then exploded for four goals in a span of 5:51 to turn the game around. Caitlin Malboeuf started the scoring run, cutting BU’s lead to one. At 15:35, Jenna Keilch tied the score for PC with an unassisted goal. It appeared the Terriers would escape the second period tied until Sonny Watrous scored at 18:35 to put the Friars up 3-2. Just 19 seconds later, Kathleen Smith ended the Providence scoring burst, giving the Friars a 4-2 lead at the end of the second. Providence outshot BU 16-9 in the middle stanza.
Both teams kept the game clean in the third period, taking only three combined penalties. Despite outshooting the Frairs 14-8 during the period, BU couldn’t find the back of the net and picked up its first loss in five games. The Terriers’ last defeat occurred on Nov. 18, at home against Providence.
Sophomore goaltender Allyse Wilcox recorded 30 saves on the day and helped hold PC scoreless on the power-play. The Friars finished the game 0-for-8 with the player advantage.
BU returns home on Tuesday, Dec. 5, to take on Brown University at Walter Brown Arena. The two teams met once last season on January 18 in Providence, skating to a 2-2 tie.
