BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team hosts Union on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 3:00 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena. The Terriers look to earn their first win of the season against an opponent they have fared well against over the past two seasons.
Boston University is coming off a loss at home, falling to No. 2 New Hampshire, 4-1. Despite a strong first period in which the Terriers held the Wildcats to only six shots, the defense suffered some lapses in the second and third periods, allowing two goals in each. Junior Nicki Wiart scored Boston University's lone goal, striking with 3:06 left in the game during her first appearance of the season. UNH freshman Jenn Wakefield scored twice for the Wildcats, while a late open-net goal from senior Jennifer Hitchcock ended the day's scoring.
The Dutchwomen are also winless thus far this season, dropping their first eight games. Most recently, Union fell 3-2 against Yale as the Bulldogs scored twice in the third period. The Dutchwomen entered the third ahead 2-1, but let up two goals while only scoring one in the final period. Freshman goaltender Lundy Day saved 54 shots and sophomore Brenna Malnar had one goal and one assist.
Malnar is the only Union player with more than one point, while four players have one goal and another four players have one assist. Day has been solid this season between the pipes, despite her numbers (0-8-0/4.74/.883). She has 271 saves, averaging almost 34 per game.
BU will look to continue its past success when facing Union, a team that the Terriers have a 4-0-0 record against. The two teams have met twice in each of the past two season, with BU outscoring the Dutchwomen by a cumulative 18-6 score. In the past, juniors Erin Seman (4-3-7) and Gina Kearns (4-2-6) have fared well against Union. On Oct. 15, 2005, the Terriers had an especially good game against the Dutchwomen, winning 6-2. Then-freshmen Seman had three points in the game (1-2-3), while then-freshmen Kearns (2-0-2) and Laurel Koller (1-1-2) each had two points.
Following Saturday's action, the team returns to play quickly, facing a tough Quinnipiac team on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
