Kearns Interview on BU All-Access (Oct. 24)
BOSTON - After its second win of the season against a top-five opponent, the Boston University women's ice hockey team (4-2-1, 1-0-0 Hockey East) makes its only appearance of the regular season in Agganis Arena, hosting Maine (2-4-0, 0-0-0 HE) for a conference tilt on Saturday (Oct. 25) at 2 p.m. as part of Reunion & Alumni Weekend. One lucky student in attendance will win a free semester of books from Barnes & Noble at Boston University.
For the second time this season, BU claimed a victory over the highest-ranked opponent the team has ever beaten, knocking off No. 4 New Hampshire, 3-2, on Thursday at Walter Brown Arena. Before that game, the Terriers were ranked in a national poll for the first time ever, earning the tenth spot in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. The Terriers will be looking to extend a four-game unbeaten streak, during which three of the games came against nationally ranked opponents.
Sophomore Lauren Cherewyk was the star for BU in Thursday's win, scoring two power-play goals to help invigorate a previously struggling extra-man unit that has now scored four power-play goals in the last three games. Freshman Jenelle Kohanchuk tallied an assist on Cherewyk's game-winning goal against the Wildcats to move into a tie with senior Gina Kearns for the team lead in scoring with seven points, also good for a tie of the scoring lead among Hockey East rookies.
The Terriers will be making their second-ever appearance at Agganis Arena, where they skated to a 1-1 tie with Maine last season. BU is 5-3-1 in the all-time series and is unbeaten in the last three meetings with Maine, going 2-0-1 in last season's series. Kearns has scored three goals, including a game-winner, and added three assists in nine career games against the Black Bears.
Maine opens its Hockey East slate after going 2-4-0 in early non-conference action. The Black Bears salvaged a weekend split with Sacred Heart last weekend in Orono, Maine, winning an 11-1 rout on Saturday after falling, 3-2, in Friday's contest. Maine also split a pair of games with North Dakota and was swept at Minnesota State.
Junior Lexie Hoffmeyer (3g, 4a) and senior Vanessa Vani (2g, 5a) have led the way in scoring so far with seven points each, while senior Genevieve Turgeon has seen the bulk of the action between the pipes, posting a 4.03 goals-against average and .904 save percentage. The Black Bears boast the best power play in Hockey East, converting at a 24.3 percent clip as six different players have tallied Maine's nine power-play goals.
