BOSTON - After a 12-day hiatus, the No. 7 Boston University women's ice hockey team (5-2-3) is back in action this weekend, kicking off a season-long five-game road swing with a pair of non-conference games against ECAC Hockey foes Princeton (2-4-0) and Quinnipiac (2-9-1). The Terriers will be looking to extend a seven-game unbeaten streak when they take on the Tigers on Friday (Nov. 14) at 7 p.m. and battle the Bobcats on Saturday (Nov. 15) at 4 p.m.
BU has matched its program record with a seven-game unbeaten streak and after entering the national rankings for the first time earlier this season, the Terriers find themselves ranked seventh in both national polls for the second straight week.
Helping to fuel BU's recent run has been sophomore Lauren Cherewyk, who carries a five-game point streak into this weekend that has accounted for her entire season output of eight points (6g, 2a). Senior Gina Kearns is the Terriers' top scorer with 11 points (5g, 6a) and junior Melissa Anderson is just behind with 10 points and a team-leading eight assists. The BU power play has also been a boon of late as the Terriers have netted a man-up goal in each of the last six games.
While the offense has provided reliable output, BU owes much of its success to a stingy defense backstopped by senior goaltender Allyse Wilcox. The Terriers have given up more than two goals in only two games all season and Wilcox was honored for her hot start with the Hockey East ITECH Goaltender of the Month award as well as earning Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week honors from the league after the team's last outings, a pair of shootout wins over No. 5 New Hampshire and Providence.
Wilcox boasts a 3-1-3 record and .924 save percentage and the BU defense is ranked third in Hockey East, giving up 2.10 goals per game.
Friday's game will take the Terriers to Princeton, N.J., for the first time in team history after BU hosted the Tigers last season. Princeton skated to a 4-2 win in that meeting on Nov. 10 as Christine Foster scored the game-winning goal early in the third period, while defensemen Amanda Shaw and Melissa Tetreau netted tallies for the Terriers.
Princeton will be retuning home after a weekend split in upstate New York where the Tigers beat Cornell, 6-3, before falling to Colgate, 3-1. Princeton has also split with Connecticut at home and lost meetings with Dartmouth and Harvard.
Sophomore defenseman Sasha Sherry (3g, 5a), a second-team all-conference and all-rookie pick last season, leads the Tigers in scoring with eight points and freshman Paula Romanchuk (2g, 4a) is close behind. Sherry and Romanchuk each carry three-game point streaks into this weekend. Freshman Danielle DiCesare matches the team lead with three goals. Princeton's returning blueline corps includes senior Katherine Dineen, last season's Best Defensive Defenseman in ECAC Hockey, and all-rookie selection Laura Martindale.
Senior Kristen Young has started every game between the pipes. She has a 3.30 goals-against average and .906 save percentage.
On Saturday, BU will be making its first appearance at another rink on its first trip to Quinnipiac since the opening of the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. The Terriers have met the Bobcats every season and are 2-0-1 all-time, winning the last two meetings after skating to a tie in 2005. When these teams met last season at Walter Brown Arena, Holly Lorms scored a pair of goals and Kearns chipped in three assists to help BU to a 6-1 win on Nov. 7. Anderson has tallied five points (2g, 3a) in two games against Quinnipiac, including the game-winner last year.
After struggling to a 1-9-0 start to the season, the Bobcats enjoyed their best weekend of the year with a three-point trip to upstate New York, erasing two-goal deficits in both games to beat Colgate, 3-2, and tie with Cornell, 2-2. Quinnipiac's only other win of the year came on Oct. 17 against Syracuse and the Bobcats will face Vermont on Friday before welcoming the Terriers.
Senior Elyse Cole spurred Quinnipiac's most recent comeback, scoring both goals to lift the Bobcats to a tie with the Big Red on Saturday. Cole has seven points (5g, 2a) this season, second on the team to junior Janine Duffy (4g, 4a).
Junior Nanna Holm-Glass saw the bulk of the action in net for the first nine games, but sophomore Tia Wishart got the start in the last two contests. Wishart is 1-0-1 with a 2.07 goals-against average and .946 save percentage, while Holm-Glass has a 1-8-0 record to go with a 4.74 GAA and .860 save percentage.
