Burlington, Vt. - The Boston University women's ice hockey won the opening game of a double-bill this weekend at Vermont, outscoring the Catamounts 3-1 Friday night to slide into fourth place in Hockey East. Sophomore Melissa Anderson scored two goals for the second time in three games, teaming up with junior Caroline Bourdeau to score twice in the first 1:30 of play to give the Terriers all the offense they would need. With the win, Boston University has now taken three straight games, including two conference competitions.
The Terriers (11-12-3, 7-6-1 HE) opened the game hot, scoring on each of their first two shots of the night. Offense was hard to find afterwards, as the game shifted into a defensive battle, with junior goaltender Allyse Wilcox making 24 saves on the way to her third consecutive win and ninth of the season, dropping her goals against average to 1.68 and bring her save percentage to .936. Wilcox did not allow Vermont's lone goal, as it went in on the open net during a delayed penalty.
Anderson sparked the early scoring with a goal 25 seconds into the first period, nailing a one-timer of an assist from freshman Holly Lorms from behind. Bourdeau struck for the Terriers' second goal just 1:05 later, netting the puck off a pass from Jonnie Bloemers before the teams sunk into defensive mode for the next 50:57.
At 12:27 of the third period, the Catamounts cut the lead to one on an unusual play, as Vermont goaltender Kristen Olychuck gained credit for the score. On a delayed penalty, the Terriers pulled Wilcox out of goal and attacked th Vermont net. After a save by Olychuck, BU tried to center the puck but let the pass loose into their own zone and into goal.
However, Anderson answered back with her second score of the game at 15:44, stealing the puck on a fore-check and sending it home to rebuild a two goal lead and ending the day's scoring.
Aside from the score, the lines on both teams are very similar. Each side committed five penalties and none of the goals were scored on the power play. The Terriers out-shot the Catamounts by a slight margin, winning the battle 27-25.
The teams will meet again tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. at Gutterson Fieldhouse. It will be the third and final meeting between the teams this year, as BU also won the first game of the series, 3-0, on Dec. 2.
