ORONO, Maine - Three power-play goals helped the Boston University women's ice hockey team to a 5-1 win over Maine on Sunday evening at Alfond Arena. Senior Gina Kearns scored twice and junior Sarah Appleton tallied a career-high three assists for the Terriers, who improved to 11-7-5 overall and 8-4-0 in Hockey East play, moving into second place in the league standings.
Senior Sarah Russell and freshman Jenelle Kohanchuk also scored on the power play and sophomore Lauren Cherewyk accounted for the Terriers' other goal. Junior Melissa Haber made 15 saves in goal for BU, who completed a regular-season sweep of the Black Bears for the first time in program history.
Sophomore Jennie Gallo scored Maine's lone goal on the power play, while senior Genevieve Turgeon stopped 30 shots between the pipes as the Black Bears fell to 4-17-2 overall and 1-9-1 in the conference with their fourth straight loss.
Late in the first period, a pair of Maine penalties on senior Vanessa Vani and junior Lexie Hoffmeyer gave the Terriers a two-man advantage for 1:17. BU capitalized on the opportunity when sophomore Jillian Kirchner took a shot from a scrum in front of the net that was blocked by a defenseman behind Turgeon, but Kearns was on the other side to put the rebound in the open net at 16:48.
The Terriers doubled their lead early in the second period on the first power-play opportunity of the frame. With Vani in the box for checking, Appleton passed to Russell in the high slot, who faked a shot and hesitated before sending the puck past Turgeon for her second goal of the season at 2:53.
The Black Bears got one back on their own power-play opportunity after Haber was called for interference. Gallo intercepted a BU clearing attempt and ripped a shot that snuck just under the crossbar at 5:12 for her team-leading ninth tally.
BU restored the two-goal lead soon after when Cherewyk netted her ninth of the season at 6:36. Junior Melissa Anderson took a shot that was absorbed by Turgeon, but popped back out of the crease where Cherewyk was waiting to bang it into the goal.
Appleton tallied her third assist on the power play at 7:55 in the final frame, capitalizing on a checking penalty against Maine sophomore Jordan Colliton. Taking a pass from Russell, Appleton sent a shot from the blue line through traffic that Kohanchuk tipped into the net for her ninth goal of the season.
Kearns punctuated the win with a short-handed tally for her second of the game and team-leading 11th of the season with 1:09 to go in the third. Sophomore Holly Lorms gained control of the puck and broke out for a two-on-two rush, dishing to Kearns in front of the net.
The Terriers put 30+ shots on goal for the sixth straight game, outshooting Maine by a 35-16 margin. After suffering through a stretch of four straight games without a power-play goal, BU was 3-for-6 on the man advantage, the most power-play goals the Terriers have scored in a game since Oct. 25.
The Terriers are back in action on Saturday (Jan. 24), traveling to Rhode Island to face Providence in a Hockey East clash at 2 p.m.
