The Boston University women's hockey team kicks off a five-game road series on Friday, Oct. 16, taking on Wayne State at the City Sports Center in Detroit, Mich., at 7 p.m., and again on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. Friday's matchup will be the first ever between the two squads, and Wayne State represents the second consecutive CHA opponent for BU.
With ties in its first two games of the season, BU captured its first win of 2009-10 with a dramatic 4-3 overtime win over Robert Morris at home on Oct. 9. The Terriers got on the board early, thanks to senior co-captain Sarah Appleton's first goal of the season, and used sophomore Kasey Boucher's first ever goals as a Terrier to take a 3-0 lead into the third period. Three RMU goals within a six-minute span erased the BU lead but Boucher found junior Lauren Cherewyk on a break and Cherewyk buried her second goal of the season with just 23.7 seconds left in overtime to give the hosts a 4-3 win.
Thanks to a career night against the Colonials, Boucher is currently tied for the team lead in goals (2) and points (3), along with Cherewyk (2-1-3), junior Jillian Kirchner (1-2-3) and freshman Jill Cardella (1-2-3). Senior co-captain Sarah Appleton has a goal and an assist on the season, and junior Holly Lorms has two assists on the year. Senior goalie Melissa Haber has compiled a 1-0-2 record with a .912 save percentage and 2.47 goals-against average.
The Warriors opened their regular season slate last weekend with a pair of games in Troy, N.Y., against Rensselaer, coming away with an 0-1-1 record on the weekend. After falling behind 3-0 early in the first game, Wayne State mounted a comeback in the third period that fell just short in a 3-2 loss to RPI. Julie Hebert scored the first Warrior goal of the season just 3:17 into the third period and Gina Buquet brought the visitors to within one with a short-handed tally with just under three minutes to play. Senior goalie Lindsey Park made 32 saves for the Warriors in the loss. Game two proved to be a defensive showcase by both teams as the game ended in a 0-0 draw. Wayne State sophomore goalie Delayne Brian stopped all 37 shots she faced in just the second-ever 0-0 tie in school history.
With a goal and an assist in the season-opener, Buquet leads the Warriors with two points on the year. Hebert and Katrina Protopapas each have one point for Wayne State on the young season. The goalie tandem of Park and Brian has combined for a .958 save percentage and 1.44 goals against average in two games this year.
Following the series in Detroit, both the Terriers and Warriors have road trips the following weekend. BU travels to New York to face No. 10 St. Lawrence on Friday, Oct. 23, and No. 4 Clarkson on Saturday, Oct. 24. Wayne State also travels to New York to play two against Colgate on Friday and Saturday.
