CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Boston University sophomore Jenelle Kohanchuk of the women's ice hockey team is this week's Pure Hockey Player of the Week, the Hockey East office announced Monday. This is Kohanchuk's second-career conference Player of the Week nod and the second time a BU player has received the honor this season.
Kohanchuk stole the show on Saturday against Wayne State, becoming the first player in team history to score four goals in a single game and leading the Terriers to a 4-2 win over the Warriors. The sophomore wasted little time getting her team on the board, potting her first score just 16 seconds into the game. After converting on her own rebound in the second period, Kohanchuk tallied two power-play scores to finish her record-setting day. Her two man-up scores also ties a team record for power-play goals in a game.
Last year's point leader, Kohanchuk had never scored more than two goals in a single game and joins a list of just three other BU players who have scored three or more in one contest.
The Winnipeg, Man., native now leads the team in goals this season with five, and is tied for the lead in points with five on the year. With junior Jillian Kirchner receiving Player of the Week honors two weeks ago, the award has now gone to a BU player in two of the four weeks it has been awarded this season.
Kohanchuk and the Terriers take on the No. 10 St. Lawrence Saints this coming Friday, Oct. 23, and square off against No. 4 Clarkson the following afternoon.
