The Boston University women's ice hockey team (6-4-5, 4-3-1-1) opens its season series with the Maine Black Bears (3-9-2, 1-5-2-1) at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m.. Tuesday's game represents the first time the Terriers will face the Black Bears at the Lewiston venue.
Boston University holds the series edge against Maine with an 8-3-1 record in 12 career matchups. The Terriers have the edge in goals scored, 36-24, but both teams have recorded a shutout in the series history. The Terriers swept the season series in 2008-09, outscoring the Black Bears 18-4 over three games. Lauren Cherewyk recorded just the third hat-trick in Terriers history in an 8-1 win at Agganis Arena on Oct. 25. In two games at Alfond Arena over the weekend of Jan. 17-18, BU tallied 5-2 and 5-1 victories to seal the season series sweep.
The Terriers are coming off a payback win, shutting out conference rival Boston College, 4-0, on its home ice on Wednesday, Nov. 18 after the Eagles took a 2-1 win at Walter Brown in the first meeting this season. Senior goalie Melissa Haber tied the program record for career shutouts with her seventh clean sheet, as the Terriers collected their second shutout win of the season.
A pair of BU goals in both the first and second periods gave the visitors a 4-0 lead after two periods of play. Lauren Cherewyk and Jill Cardella found the scoresheet in the first, while defensemen Carly Warren and Sarah Appleton were the goal-scorers in the middle stanza. The Eagles came out gunning through the majority of the second period, but Haber was rock-solid in net, stopping 19 shots in the second stanza alone and totaling 37 for the game. The Terriers held the Eagles scoreless on eight power-play opportunities, and have now held BC to a 0-for-10 power-play mark over two games this season.
Jenelle Kohanchuk (10g, 5a) and Melissa Anderson (4g, 10a) remain the top two scoring threats for the Terriers while Cardella (8g, 5a) continues her solid rookie campaign. Cardella leads all league rookies with eight goals on the year and a 1.00 points-per-game average, and stands eighth nationally amongst first year players with a 0.87 PPG mark. On the strength of two shutouts in the month of November, Haber has lowered her goals-against average to 2.43 on the season and 1.68 in conference contests to go along with her .910 overall save percentage.
While Maine has endured a trying season to this point, the Black Bears are coming off a noteworthy win, blanking the ninth-ranked Huskies of Northeastern, 1-0, in their last game.
In the second game of a two-game road series, the Black Bears stunned the host Huskies, 1-0, at Matthews Arena on Sunday, Nov. 15. Both teams eclipsed the 30-shot plateau, but it was Maine that broke through on a second period power-play. Jenna Ouellette buried her fourth goal of the season at 5:55 into the second stanza, converting feeds from Taryn Peacock and Jessica Bond. Maine goalie Brittany Ott stopped all 34 shots she faced for her second win of the season.
On the strength of a team-high nine assists, Ouellette is the team leader in points with 13 on the season. Junior Jennie Gallo is the top goal-scorer for Maine with five on the year and is tied with Peacock for second on the team with nine points. Ott and Candice Currier have platooned at the goalie position and both hold save percentages in the .900 range. Ott has a goals-against average of 2.89 to go along with her .911 save percentage while Currier's 2.91 goals-against average accompanies her .909 save percentage.
After their contest with the Terriers, the Black Bears will take to the sky, heading off to North Dakota for two games against the Fighting Sioux on Nov. 27-28.
BU is back in action this weekend as the Terriers will play two at Princeton, first on Friday, Nov. 27 and then on Saturday, Nov. 28. Both games are slated for 4 p.m.
