The No. 8 Boston University women's ice hockey team continues its longest road stretch of the season, traveling to Princeton, N.J., to take on the Princeton Tigers in two games on Nov. 27-28 at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink. The games this weekend represent the third and fourth matchups between the teams, with both Princeton and BU recording a win in the young series.
Both teams have netted four goals against the other but BU holds the lone shutout in the young series. Last season, the Terriers traveled to Hobey Baker Rink and escaped with a 2-0 win. A first period goal by then-senior Erin Seman proved to be the game-winner and a Jillian Kirchner third-period goal provided some insurance for the hosts. Then-senior Allyse Wilcox stopped 30 shots for the Terriers to record the shutout.
The Terriers are coming off a 1-1 (1-0) shootout win over Maine in Lewiston on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Jenelle Kohanchuk was the second BU shooter in the shootout and faked her shot right before burying a left-side wrister to seal the win. BU goalie Melissa Haber finished the night with 26 saves while her counterpart Brittany Ott stopped 33 shots on the night. BU got on the board early in the first, taking a 1-0 lead with just 5:47 gone in the second. Melissa Anderson won a faceoff in the Maine zone and fired a shot on net. Black Bear goalkeeper Brittany Ott made the save but Jill Cardella was on the doorstep for the rebound and buried the puck for a 1-0 lead.
Jenelle Kohanchuk (10g, 5a) and Melissa Anderson (4g, 11a) remain the top two scoring threats for the Terriers while Cardella (9g, 5a) continues her solid rookie campaign. Cardella leads all league rookies with nine goals on the year and a 1.00 points-per-game average, and stands eighth nationally amongst first year players with a 0.87 PPG mark. Haber has put together a solid month of November, entering the Princeton series with a goals-against average of 2.30 on the season and 1.56 in conference contests to go along with her .915 overall save percentage.
The Tigers (6-3-1, 5-2-1) are off to a strong start in 2009-10, holding down the No. 3 spot in ECAC Hockey standings. Princeton has just one loss in four games this season on its home ice.
Princeton is coming off a weekend split against two different conference foes, falling to No. 7 Cornell 1-0 and holding off Colgate 3-2 at Hobey Baker Rink on Nov. 20-21. In Saturday's win, Princeton and Colgate traded goals in the first and second periods with Melanie Wallace and Paula Romanchuk netting goals for the Tigers. Less than five minutes into the third, Danielle DiCesare tallied the Tigers' third goal which proved to be the game-winner.
With five goals and a team-high eight assists, DiCesare leads the Tigers with 13 points on the season. Romanchuk (4g, 7a) is second on the team with 11 points and sophomore Heather Landry is third with nine points (6g, 3a). Freshman Cassie Sequin and junior Rachel Weber have split time in net so far this season and both have been steady for the Tigers. In five games, Sequin has conceded just eight goals for a 1.72 GAA to go with a .918 save percentage while Weber boasts a 1.84 GAA along with a .899 save percentage.
After their contests with the Terriers, the Tigers make a trip to upstate New York to square off against St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Dec. 4-5.
The Terriers finish up their lengthy road stretch with a trip to Storrs, Conn., to take on the Connecticut Huskies on Dec. 4.
