After a tough loss to cross-town rival Boston College in its last time out, the Boston University women's ice hockey team (3-2-4, 1-1-0) looks to get back to its winning ways against No. 3 New Hampshire (7-1-2, 3-0-0) in a home-and-home series this weekend. The teams square off on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m., at Walter Brown Arena, before heading to Durham, N.H., on Saturday for another 7 p.m. game.
After registering a solid 3-1 win in its conference road opener over Providence, BU opened its home conference slate with a tough 2-1 loss to cross-town rival Boston College last Monday night.
After a scoreless first period, BC took advantage of a BU defensive lapse and took a 1-0 lead on an Allie Thunstrom tally. The Terriers snapped right back with a score of their own just 48 second later, as Jill Cardella took a Melissa Anderson feed and evened the score on her fourth goal of the season.
The Eagles struck again early in the third period and despite good pressure from the Terriers down the stretch, including a Laurel Koller shot that hit the pipe, the hosts could not respond and the game ended in a 2-1 final. BU goalie Melissa Haber stopped 14 shots while BC's Corrine Boyles made 27 saves in the game.
Despite seeing her four-game point streak come to and end, sophomore Jenelle Kohanchuk still leads the team with eight goals and nine points on the year. With her assist against the Eagles, Anderson recorded her 100th-career point, putting her just two shy of Gina Kearns' all-time program mark and making her one of just three active Hockey East players with 100 career points. Cardella leads all BU rookies with four goals and two assists on the year while goalie Melissa Haber holds a 2.76 goals against average and .892 save percentage.
New Hampshire is coming off a solid homestand last weekend, downing conference foes Connecticut (3-1) and Maine (5-0) to up their Hockey East record to 3-0-0 on the year.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead into the first break but goals from Kelly Cahill, Courtney Birchard and Hockey East Player of the Month Kelly Paton iced the 3-1 final for UNH. Against the Black Bears, Goalie Kayley Herman recorded just 10 saves in a 5-0 shutout at the Whittemore Center. Paton (two goals) and Cahill (one goal) were joined by Micaela Long and Bryanna Farris on the scoresheet while Paton and Raylen Dziengelewski added two assist each on the afternoon.
The senior trio of Paton, Cahill and Long has proven to be deadly in the early going, accounting for 46 of the team's 94 total points this season. Paton leads the way with 19 points on six goals and 13 assists while Long is close behind with 17 points (5-12-17). Cahill (5-5-10) stands second on the team in goals. The Wildcat goalie tandem of Herman and Lindsey Minton has been airtight so far this season, combining for just 16 goals allowed in 10 games. Herman boasts a 1.40 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage while Minton holds a 1.80 GAA and a .893 save percentage.
Looking past this weekend, the Terriers' next game comes on Wednesday, Nov. 11 as they welcome Vermont to Walter Brown Arena for a 7 p.m. start. After facing the Terriers this weekend, the Wildcats travel to Burlington, Vt., for a conference matchup against the Catamounts on Saturday, Nov. 14.
