WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Freshman forward Jill Cardella has been named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday. The award marks the first conference honor for Cardella in her young career and the third conference award received by a BU player this season.
In three games this past week, Cardella notched at least a point in each game, upping her season point total to nine on six goals and three assists. The Rochester, N.Y., native netted the lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Boston College on Monday, Nov. 2, had a goal and an assist in a 4-3 defeat to No. 3 New Hampshire on Friday, Nov. 6, and registered the go-ahead goal in a 4-4 (1-0) shootout win over the Wildcats on Saturday, Nov. 7.
Cardella leads all conference rookies with three goals on the season, and is tied for first with a 1.00 points-per-game average. Nationally, Cardella ranks 10th amongst freshmen in points per game (0.82), and her six goals is the third-highest mark amongst first-year players.
The freshman joins Jenelle Kohanchuk and Jillian Kirchner as Terriers to be recognized with Hockey East weekly accolades this season. Cardella is the first BU player to earn a Rookie of the Week nod in the 2009-10 season, as Kohanchuk and Kirchner both received Player of the Week honors.
Cardella and the Terriers are in action next against Vermont on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at Walter Brown Arena at 7 p.m.
