WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Jill Cardella, a freshman forward on the Boston University women’s ice hockey team, has been named the Hockey East Bauer Rookie of the Month for November, the league announced Tuesday. This marks the first monthly award received by a BU player this season after Jenelle Kohanchuk was a runner up for Player of the Month in October.
The Rochester, N.Y. native kicked off the month of November tallying the lone goal in a 2-1 defeat to Boston College on Nov. 2. The tally began a five-game point streak, during which she netted goals in four straight games, including the game-winning tally in a 4-0 shutout of Vermont on Nov. 11. Cardella notched a goal and an assist in a 4-0 payback win at BC on Nov.18, and finished off her scoring on Nov. 24, netting the lone goal in a 1-1 (1-0) shootout win against Maine.
Cardella leads all Hockey East rookies with nine points and six goals in league play. The rookie’s six league tallies marked the most of any player in the month of November in league action. Her nine points in November stands second only to Providence sophomore Ashley Cottrell and her nine overall goals on the season ranks tied for second nationally amongst first-year players. Cardella finished the month with a +6 rating and currently ranks second on the team in goals (9) and third in points (14).
Cardella has been named to the Hockey East Honor Roll five times already this season and received Rookie of the Week honors for the week of Nov. 9.
The Terriers play just two games in the month of December, squaring off against Connecticut in a home-and-home series on Dec. 4-5. Friday’s game in Storrs, Conn., begins at 7 p.m., while Saturday’s matchup at Walter Brown Arena is a 3 p.m. start.
