WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Boston University women’s ice hockey senior forward Melissa Anderson has been named Hockey East Pure Hockey Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Anderson joins Jillian Kirchner and Jenelle Kohanchuk as the third Terrier to win the award this season and receives the league player of the week award for the third time in her career.
Anderson has been the sparkplug for the Terrier offense to start the 2010 slate, recording two goals and an assist in a 4-1 win over Yale and again in a 5-5 tie against Brown. Against the Bulldogs, Anderson netted the first two goals of the game and assisted on Kirchner’s power-play tally to give the Terriers a 3-0 lead after two periods. Against Brown, Anderson evened the score at 1-1 in the second period with a power-play goal and potted the goal that caused the game to end in a 5-5 draw. Her assist came on Holly Lorms’ second goal of the game which helped BU climb back from a 5-3 third-period deficit.
The Langley, B.C., native is the all-time scoring leader for the Terriers, becoming only the second BU women’s player to break the 100-point barrier in a career. After this weekend, she stands at 116 points for her career and is the all-time assists leader with 71 during her tenure. Anderson also stands in second on the all-time goals list (45) and is just five shy of Gina Kearns’ all-time record of 50. She is also tied for the all-time lead in power-play goals with 16.
Anderson and the Terriers have the week off and finish up their homestand on Tuesday, Jan. 19 when they welcome local rival Boston College to Walter Brown Arena for a 7 p.m. game.
