The No. 8 Boston University women's ice hockey team visits Vail, Colo., this weekend to face WCHA opponents St. Cloud State and No. 2 Wisconsin on Friday and Saturday. Game time on Friday is set for 6 p.m. ET while Saturday's start time is 7 p.m. ET.
BU (9-1-1, 6-0-0 WHEA) will join rival Northeastern in Vail as part of a two-night, four-team weekend of hockey at Dobson Ice Arena. It will be the furthest west that BU has ever played.
The Terriers have won seven games in a row, six of which came in conference competition. BU has been buoyed by balanced scoring, as nine different skaters have tallied at least five points and three Terriers have compiled 10 or more points. The Terriers are sixth in the nation with an average of 3.55 goals per game.
In addition to boasting one of the top offenses in the nation, BU has also made defense and goaltending a hallmark of its early-season success. The Terriers have the seventh-ranked defense in the NCAA, allowing an average if just 1.64 goals per game. They have not allowed more than three goals in any game and Terrier goaltending has not yet given up three goals in a game. Senior Kerrin Sperry has been brilliant between the pipes and ranks fourth in save percentage (.950) and eighth in goals-against average (1.42) among NCAA netminders.
St. Cloud State is 1-8-3 this season, but nearly pulled off an incredible upset this past weekend against undefeated Minnesota. The Huskies led the Gophers by 2-0 and 3-2 margins, but two late third-period goals gave Minnesota its 61st straight win. Their lone win on the season came on Nov. 1, a 4-1 victory at Minnesota-Duluth.
Senior Molli Mott leads the Huskies in points (10), assists (6) and is tied with classmate Julia Gilbert for lead in goals (4). Junior goaltender Julie Friend has started eight games and has posted a .933 save percentage and a 2.84 goals-against average.
The second-ranked Badgers (8-2-0) have won six straight games after back-to-back losses against top-ranked Minnesota. Brittany Ammerman leads the team in goals (8), assists (9) and points (17). Wisconsin has the seventh-best offense (3.50 goals per game) and fourth-best defense (1.10) in the NCAA. Like the Terriers, the Badgers have one of the best goaltenders in the nation. Senior Alex Rigsby is 6-2-0 with a 1.25 goals-against average and a .949 save percentage.
Following their weekend in Vail, the Terriers will remain on the road but stay local when they head across the Charles River to face off against Harvard on Nov. 22. Puck drop for that game is set for 7 p.m.
