ORONO, Maine - Junior
Rebecca Russo notched her second goal of the season but the No. 6 Boston University women's ice hockey team was bested by Maine, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena.
BU (4-2-0, 1-1-0 WHEA) saw its three-game win streak snapped as Maine improved to 3-5-1 and 2-1-0 in Hockey East. The Terriers' shutout streak ended at 94:17, dating back to the third period of their 5-2 win at Clarkson on Oct. 18. Senior Sarah Bayersdorfer collected her first goal of the season in the final moments of regulation thanks to helpers from sophomore Natalie Flynn and senior Shannon Doyle while freshman Rebecca Leslie assisted on Russo's marker. Freshman Erin O'Neil made a career-high 26 saves in the loss.
Russo gave the Terriers a 1-0 lead just 3:55 into the proceedings. Leslie won a battle along the half-wall in the BU zone and quickly sent an outlet pass to Russo in the neutral zone. The junior had great instincts and took off towards the Maine goal as Leslie regained possession, so she was two steps ahead of the defense when she caught the puck. Russo skated in alone on Meghann Treacy and calmly finished for her second strike of the season.
Maine evened the score on its first power-play opportunity of the game, but it was the only blemish on O'Neil's record in the second stanza. She made 12 saves and was brilliant throughout the period. Her biggest save of the game came when the Black Bears were awarded a penalty shot after a Terrier defender played the puck with her hand in the crease. Victoria Hummel's chance was denied, however, as O'Neil stood tall and made the save as Hummel attempted to beat the freshman goaltender five-hole.
Freshman Victoria Bach had a great look at goal with a breakaway chance of her own late in the period, but she was turned aside by Treacy. The Terriers got 10 shots on goal in the middle 20 minutes but were unable to break through.
It continued to be a back-and-forth game in the third period, and the Terriers almost had a 2-1 lead just 2:25 into it. Junior Kayla Tutino was at the left post when she got a feed from classmate Dakota Woodworth. She appeared to knock the puck into the net, but the referees ruled after video review that the puck never crossed the line, keeping the game tied.
The Black Bears scored the first of three straight third-period goals at the 12:46 juncture of the frame when Emilie Brigham converted a 2-on-1 chance. Just 51 seconds later, Audra Richards extended the lead to 3-1. She added an empty-netter with 57 seconds remaining in regulation to seal the victory. The Terriers had 43 shots on goal over 60 minutes, including 17 in the third period.
Bayersdorfer's goal came with 2.2 seconds to play off a nice faceoff win by Flynn. She won the puck straight back to Doyle at the top of the right faceoff circle. Doyle fired a shot towards goal that Treacy stopped, but Bayersdorfer was in perfect position at the far post to gather the rebound and lift the puck over the sprawling goaltender.
BU will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 28, when the Terriers host Northeastern in their home opener. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
