The Boston University men's lacrosse team will conclude its inaugural season on Sunday afternoon when the Terriers welcome third-ranked and reigning NCAA champion Duke to Nickerson Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
BU (2-11, 2-6 PL) will honor its three-member senior class before the game. Kyle Lange, Emerson Rogers and Brad Sauln will be the first group of men's lacrosse players to graduate later this month. The trio spent three years on the club team before joining the varsity program in September. Lange saw time in the cage this season, stopping both shots he faced at No. 1 Loyola on April 12.
The Terriers had last weekend off after collecting their second win of the season on April 19. BU bested Holy Cross, 9-8, and was one win shy of qualifying for the Patriot League tournament. Both of the Terriers' wins this season have come on the road.
Freshman Cal Dearth was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week on April 21 for his one-goal, one-assist effort in the victory over the Crusaders. Dearth leads the Terriers with 13 assists and 24 points and has collected at least two points in each of the last five fixtures as well as in six of the last seven contests. He is also third on the squad with 26 ground balls.
Eight different Terriers scored a goal against Holy Cross, indicative of the balanced BU attack. Fourteen players have found the back of the net this season, eight of whom have at least five goals. In addition, 15 Terriers have at least one assist. BU has also shown depth on the defensive end, as 20 different players have caused at least one turnover and 29 Terriers have collected at least one ground ball.
Duke (12-3) enters Sunday having lost to Syracuse, 16-15, in the ACC semifinals on April 25. This will be the Blue Devils' final regular-season game of the year before they begin their NCAA title defense the weekend of May 10. Duke is led on offense by senior Jordan Wolf, who is tied for second in the nation with 47 goals. Wolf also leads the Blue Devils with 72 points and is tied with sophomore Deemer Class for the team lead in assists (25).
Sophomore goalkeeper Luke Aaron has started 13 of the Blue Devils' 15 games this year. He is 11-3 with a 9.45 goals-against average and a .537 save percentage. Terrier freshman Christian Carson-Banister has similar numbers, posting a 10.00 goals-against average and a .531 save percentage.
