Boston University head men’s lacrosse coach Ryan Polley announced the team’s end-of-season awards on Monday afternoon.
BU completed its inaugural season with two victories and played some of its best lacrosse against ranked opponents. The Terriers lost their three games to current top-20 teams this season by only a combined nine goals. Eight different players were recognized, all of whom finished their freshman season with the team.
“I’m extremely proud of how our first season went, not only on the field, but also in the classroom and in the community," Polley said. "This first group will always be special to the program; they set a tremendous foundation for the future of Boston University men’s lacrosse. These eight individuals went above and beyond expectations both on and off the field and I’m honored to recognize them.”
Jake Dansey was the lone player to receive two awards, including the Terrier Award, which recognizes the player who best exemplifies excellence in academics, athletics and community. Dansey was terrific on the field as a starting close defender and also won the Terrier GPA Award thanks to his performance in the classroom.
Christian Carson-Banister earned the team’s MVP award after an outstanding season between the pipes. Carson-Banister ranks sixth in the NCAA with an average of 12.17 saves per game and was in the cage for both of the Terriers’ wins. He stopped 25 shots against No. 3 Duke in the regular-season finale, which is the most saves by any Division I goalkeeper in a single game this season.
Cal Dearth was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year after he finished the season with a team-high 26 points. He tied for the team lead in assists with 15 and also scored 11 goals; he was one of two Terriers to reach double figures in both goals and assists and did so as a midfielder. Dominick Calisto was the Defensive Player of the Year after a strong year as part of the Terriers’ top defensive unit. He finished the year with 23 ground balls and was tied for second with 14 caused turnovers.
Craig Zebrowski was the team’s Most Improved Player after a fine debut season. He totaled five goals and four assists for nine points. Zebrowski had a point in each of the final four games of the year and was sharp in his collegiate debut, scoring a goal and adding an assist against Lehigh. Casey Irish won the fitness award thanks to his tremendous work ethic in the strength & conditioning room.
Sam Talkow won the Ground Ball Award after leading the team with 94 ground balls. He was outstanding at the faceoff X, winning 160 draws and finishing the year with a 56.7 percent success rate. He saved his best game for last, winning a career-high 16 faceoffs against Duke’s Brendan Fowler, one of the top faceoff men in the country. He also tallied a career-high three goals against the Blue Devils, finishing the season with six.
Chad Bell earned the Terrier Community Service Award thanks to his hard work and dedication to helping others. He was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, which provides insight and offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives on campus. SAAC also organizes most of the student-athlete community service initiatives run by student-athletes throughout the year. He volunteered at events such as the annual Holiday Reading Program and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.
