The Boston University men's lacrosse team will begin a three-game homestand on Tuesday night when the Terriers host Harvard at Nickerson Field. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
Both teams will join the One Love Foundation on Tuesday in the fight against relationship violence. BU and Harvard will wear bracelets, stickers and socks to help raise awareness. The Terriers will also make a donation to the One Love Foundation. In January, the team held a screening of the Foundation's short film "Escalation," with over 400 people in attendance.
The One Love Foundation was created in 2010 following the death of Yeardley Love, a University of Virginia senior who lost her life to relationship violence at the hands of her ex-boyfriend just two weeks shy of graduation. Originally created to honor "Yards" and draw attention to student athletes like her who contribute positively to their teams and communities, the organization now seeks to prevent future tragedies by raising awareness about the warning signs of relationship violence.
BU (6-4, 3-3 PL) has lost two straight games but is a perfect 3-0 at Nickerson Field and 4-0 in home games this season. The Terriers have averaged 14.75 goals per game at home this year and have allowed fewer than 10 goals in all four of those victories. Overall, BU ranks 15th in goals per game (11.9) and will go against a Crimson defense that is 65th in team defense, having allowed an average of 13.5 goals per game.
Junior Elliott Burr had his best game in a Terrier uniform on Saturday in the team's 17-8 loss at No. 15 Army. He went 11-of-19 at the faceoff X and collected a career-high six ground balls. BU ranks seventh in the nation and first in the Patriot League in faceoff percentage at .627. The Terriers are also 14th in the country and second in the conference with an average of 31.7 ground balls per game. Sophomore Sam Talkow is still among the top 10 faceoff men in the NCAA, ranking seventh at .656.
Freshman Ryan Hilburn continues to shine in his rookie season. He collected his second straight hat trick on Saturday and also added an assist for a four-point afternoon. He has tallied a point in all 10 tilts this season and is tied for the team lead in scoring with 31 points. Sophomore Cal Dearth also has 31 points thanks to 15 goals and a team-high 16 assists.
Harvard (5-5, 1-2 Ivy League) enters Tuesday having knocked off then-No. 8/6 Cornell, 10-9, on Saturday. The Crimson has faced six ranked opponents this season and it is receiving votes in both major national polls this week after the win over the Big Red. Junior Deke Burns leads the team with 23 goals while classmate Devin Dwyer is atop the Crimson leaderboard in assists (23) and points (38). Junior goalkeeper Bryan Moore is 5-4 on the season with a 12.04 goals-against average and a .532 save percentage.
Following Tuesday's tilt the Terriers will begin a crucial two-game stretch to close out the Patriot League schedule when they welcome No. 20 Loyola Maryland.
