The Boston University men's lacrosse team will travel to Baltimore this weekend to face No. 12/13 Loyola Maryland on Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
BU (8-4, 3-3 PL) can clinch a berth in the Patriot League Tournament with a victory over Loyola (8-3, 5-1 PL). The Terriers can also secure a spot if Colgate defeats Holy Cross on Saturday. It will be the Terriers' first-ever postseason appearance.
If the Terriers win on Saturday it will also be their third victory over a ranked opponent this season. BU is 2-0 against ranked foes this year thanks to a 10-9 win over then-No. 16 Navy on Feb. 27 and a 9-8 triumph at then-No. 14 Harvard on March 22. The Terriers are also in search of their first win over the Greyhounds.
Last season, BU held Loyola scoreless for the final 17:22 of the contest but came up short in an 8-6 contest on April 11, 2015. Junior Cal Dearth had a goal and an assist in that contest and leads the Terriers with three goals and two assists in two games against Loyola. Sophomores Ryan Hilburn and Jack Wilson each had a goal and an assist along with two ground balls in their debuts last April.
Junior Greg Wozniak was a bright spot for the Terriers during last Saturday;’s 15-4 loss to Army West Point. He set a program record with six caused turnovers and also matched a career high with eight ground balls. After his record performance on Saturday, Wozniak now ranks seventh in the NCAA with an average of 2.00 caused turnovers per game and fourth in total caused turnovers with 24.
As a team, the Terriers lead the country with 114 caused turnovers this season and are third in the NCAA with an average of 9.50 per game. They have forced 11 turnovers in each of the last two games.
The Greyhounds enter Saturday on a four-game win streak, including an 11-10 win at Lehigh last Saturday afternoon. Their three losses have all been to ranked opponents (Duke, Navy, Towson).
Freshman Pat Spencer leads Loyola in goals (21), assists (25) and points (46). Junior Brian Sherlock is next best in all three categories (14g, 9a) while senior Zach Herreweyers also has 14 goals. Junior Graham Savio has won 52.7 percent of his faceoffs this season and also leads the team with 30 ground balls. Freshman Jacob Stover has started the last four games for Loyola, posting a 5.91 goals-against average and a .645 save percentage.
Following Saturday's showdown, BU will close the Patriot League portion of its regular-season schedule at Holy Cross on Friday, April 22.
